The Alpha Who Never Loved Me (Serena and Kieran) novel Chapter 56

Chapter 56

My jaw almost dropped.

He pulled out a card and wrote a number and an address

on the back. “His name is Gabriel Aldreste. Call him and tell him I sent you.”

I took the card; my fingers trembling. “Thank you.”

“I will always be willing to help you, Serena.” He said it plainly, without weight or expectation.

The second I got home, I called the number.

A man answered with a deep, professional voice.

“My name is Serena,” I said. “Misha sent me.”

“Ah, yes.” His tone warmed. “What can I do do you?”

“Do you handle auctions? I would like to sell some jewelry.”

“Oh, yes, I do.” He chuckled. “Misha always introduces me to the best people.” He laughed to himself. “Why 11:42

  1. I’ll send you the address.”

I agreed and hung up.

I dressed in the morning and drove to the address; it was a tall apartment building in the center of the city. I parked, stepped out of my car, and walked toward the

entrance.

The lobby door opened before I reached it.

A woman stepped out. She was dressed in a black dress and her black hair was tied up in a ponytail.

Aina snarled inside me.

Sophie.

A smile spread across her face. “Dr. Blackwell,” she said. “What a coincidence.”

Gabriel and Sophie lived in the same building.

She used my maiden name. She did not call me Mrs. Thawthorne.

“It’s Mrs. Thawthorne.” I corrected her.

I wanted her to feel the sting of it, and I wanted her angry enough to go to Kieran and convince him to sign the

papers.

Sophie’s smile did not falter.

I continued toward the door.

“Dr. Blackwell.” My maiden name again. “Even though Kieran and I spent many years apart, we were never really over.”

My hands curled into fists at my sides.

I turned to face her. “If that’s true, then why didn’t you come and stop him from marrying me?”

Sophie flipped her hair over her shoulder. “You must know that Kieran and I have a son together. He loves our son and he loves me very much.” Her voice was sweet and steady. “He only married you because his family forced him to. The marriage was an obligation. He never actually wanted it.”

My nails dug into my palms.

“If you understood all of that,” I said, “then why did you come back now?”

“Because Kieran could not stand his real family living apart from him anymore.” She tilted her head. “He begged me to come back.”

Real family?

So what about the Thawthornes?

She smiled; the edges of it were sharp enough to draw

blood.

“Kieran told me he couldn’t give you love or a child. All he could offer you was his last name.” She paused and leaned closer. “Do you really want to be called the only thing he could give you?”

My lips parted but nothing came out. Something drove straight through my heart and twisted.

“You shouldn’t force yourself on Kieran anymore,” Sophie continued. “Step aside and let him be with his real family.”

I swallowed; my jaw ached from clenching. I gathered
