Chapter 57
Serena
The second Sophie hit the ground and the lobby door opened at the same time.
Surprisingly, Kieran rushed in.
Almost impressive, the timing. His true love sprawled on the floor, the villain standing over her, he arrived at the exact moment to witness the perfect scene.
I stood there and watched him drop to his knees and pull Sophie into his arms. He cradled her head against his chest and his eyes snapped up to me, then down to Sophie, then back to me.
The anger on his face burned bright.
“Didn’t I tell you to stay away from her?” He yelled it loud enough for the sound to bounce off the lobby walls.
I rolled my eyes. “What you need is a pair of glasses to see what is right in front of you.”

sobbed. “It wasn’t Mrs. Thawthorne’s fault.” Her voice came out small and pretentious. “I didn’t get out of the way on time. I fell down.”
How noble of her. The damsel defending the villain while the tears soaked through the hero’s shirt. What a beautiful story they made.
Kieran glanced at me. “Are you happy now?”
I cleared my throat. There was no point in pointing fingers; the roles were already cast. I was the villain here, and nothing I said would change that.
“I told you,” I said, “that if I saw your mistress again, I would hurt her.” I held his stare. “This is just the beginning.”
I turned and walked toward the staircase. My heels clicked against the marble floor; Aina pressed against the bond, whining, wanting me to go back, but I kept walking until I turned the corner and they could no longer see me.
I stopped.
Maghands were shaking. I lifted the sleeve of my shirt; the

fabric was long enough to cover my arms past the wrist.

Underneath, red marks circled my forearm where Sophie’s fingers dug into my skin.
Tears trickled down my face.
Of course nobody saw the marks. Nobody saw her grip my arm and refuse to let go. Nobody heard the things she said to me before I swung.
They only saw the slap, and the slap was all that mattered.
I pulled my handkerchief from my purse and wiped my face. Then I dug deeper and found my powder. I opened it, dabbed the sponge across my cheeks and under my eyes, and snapped it shut.
I straightened my clothes and pushed my shoulders back.
I had to meet with Gabriel. I had jewelry to sell and a man to divorce.

shirt, but my eyes stayed on Serena until she disappeared around the corner of the staircase.
The look on her face had made me pause.
She looked hurt. Not angry and not satisfied the way someone looked after they got what they wanted.
But she was the one who hit Sophie. She confirmed it herself.
Why did she look like the victim?
Sophie tugged on my shirt. “My legs hurt,” she whimpered.
I lifted her from the ground and carried her to the elevator. The doors opened and I stepped inside; Sophie’s head rested against my shoulder.
Her apartment was on the sixth floor. I laid her down on the sofa and the new housekeeper appeared from the kitchen, already holding a first-aid kit. She knelt beside Sophie and started to apply ointment on Sophie’s leg.
$9phie cried harder.

“I never thought she would find me here,” she said between sobs. “Mrs. Thawthorne told me this apartment belongs to her and you.” She wiped her eyes with
trembling fingers. “She said I should move out and return the place to her.”
I looked at her.
“I tried to explain.” Sophie’s voice climbed higher. “I told her I had no intention of interfering with the marriage. But she didn’t believe me.” She grabbed a tissue from the side table and pressed it against her nose. “She said she fought hard to marry you and she would never let me
ruin it.”
I stood by the window with my arms at my sides.
“She said she would never agree to a divorce.” Sophie sat up and reached for my arm; her fingers closed around my wrist. “She told me she would make me and my son disappear. Kieran, what am I going to do?”
To tell the truth, I was only partly listening.
My thoughts circled around three things and three things
only.

Why did Serena look hurt?
If Serena told Sophie she would never agree to a divorce, then why was she trying to sell the jewelry? Why did she file the papers? Why did she beg me on her knees in front of my grandfather to let her go?
Was this all an act?
Was Serena pulling her biggest tantrum yet?
I rewound every argument, every fight, every time she screamed at me and threw things and told me she wanted out. Each time, I waited. Each time, she came back. She came back to the house, she came back to our bed, she let me kiss her in the hotel suite just nights ago and I knew if it wasn’t for the phone call, something else would’ve happened.
A woman who wanted a divorce did not kiss her husband
