The Big Sky Alpha novel Chapter 100

****TRIGGER WARNING****

FREYA POV

It’s been two days since the last haze hit. Dare we say it might actually be over? Colt has decided to start putting the motions in place for a plan. We need to figure out where these things are hunkered down during the day so we’re sending out a group of a couple of Damon’s men and about 10 of our men to see if they can figure it out before sunset.

“You must be on your way back here before sunset! If for any reason you’ve not figured it out today that’s fine, I do not care how close you are I do not care if you’ve finally just gotten a scent, you will shift and run back here! We will continue tomorrow and the day after and the day after if we must but we’re not risking it!” Colt commanded the men heading down the mountain.

The sun is just rising this morning, this will give them ample time to figure it out.

“Do not engage if you do find them. Come back and report. Please remember their bite is lethal. One of our pack young pack members was just killed by their bite. Do not make us endure another funeral!” He said.

“Yes alpha!” They ask responded.

With that, they were off and the wait for news began. Colt turned to me as they all disbursed, “The sooner we locate their hide out the sooner we kill these bastards.” He grabbed my hand, but his eyes were elsewhere. I followed them to find Dwain, River’s father standing at the edge of the tree line.

I’m not sure if he’s just waiting or debating joining the search. I know Colt specifically requested he did not join the search for fear that he’d go in and try to handle the vamps himself and get killed. I couldn’t imagine the pain that man feels, I would assume if it were me I’d probably do it. F**k the consequences at that point.

I think this is why Colt fears that seeing the case so much, he’d be the same way. It’s Colt’s job as Alpha to protect his people in every way he can.

He feels responsible for River’s death. He learned that the only reason the girls got through the guards without them noticing was because one of the guards left his post to have sex of all things. The guard has been dealt with. Colt was beyond angered by this, especially since the consequence of that guard’s actions resulted in the murder of a young wolf.

The guard has been imprisoned and now all the young men that were guards are in other positions. Only the most absolute trusted men are allowed as guards. He asked Levi and Ash to figure out who wouldn’t be a concern for this.

It turns out that young guard had just recently been mated and they hadn’t lived through a haze so they had just recently started having sex behind the girl’s parent’s backs because they apparently feared her parents not approving since they didn’t like him.

Explains why the boy would do it, to an extent. Still didn’t make Colt lenient on this. He’s wanting the revenge to take place then he’ll decide how angry her is at that point and decide final punishment. Had it not ended with the death of a young pack member, I’d think he’d probably just let him go after some time in the jail. Sadly though, I really don’t think that will be the case for this guy.

Colt walked over to Dwain and struck up a conversation with him. I decided it would be best right now to just let them be, and I went to go find River’s mother. Colt and I have been making it a point to check in on them every other day or so.

While I was walking over to their hut I couldn’t shake this feeling like someone was watching me. I stopped and looked around, sniffed the air around me and nothing seemed abnormal. I chalked it up to my nerves, though the feeling just wouldn’t go away.

I knocked on the door to their hut, after a few minutes of no one answering I began walking away. The feeling was starting to get to me, I was looking over my shoulder and came to another stop. I decided to go back to the hut and knock again.

Then I realized something seemed off. The flowers that are normally very well watered and taken care of around their hut were drooping like they hadn’t been watered in days. I knocked again.

One of the neighboring huts has a young wolf girl outside sitting in a chair sewing. I walked over to her and asked if she’d seen Dwain or Laura, River’s mother, recently. She said that she saw Dwain come out of there yesterday morning but he hasn’t been back and Laura she hasn’t seen in a couple days.

Nothing about this felt right. I decided to go back to their hut, I opened the door and walked in. That’s when I noticed the foul smell. Laura was laying in their bed, her throat cut.

I linked Colt immediately, “Colt Laura’s been killed.”

He responded, “Explains why he just hit me then ran into the forest.”

The poor man has lost it. I can’t say I blame him. I’m not sure why he felt his wife needed to die, but it’s pretty clear Dwain is going to go after the vamps himself just like Colt feared.

I’m just a few moments Colt and Levi were walking into the hut. Colt’s nose was a little bloody, but he looked okay.

“Get this taken care of.” He told Levi. “Take her to Sasha, she’ll get to work on the funeral arrangements.”

He just stared at Laura, I could feel the sadness filling him. By the looks of it, she’s been there about a day or two. He probably killed her when he woke yesterday morning and then left.

I placed my hand on Colt’s shoulder, “I’m sorry you’re dealing with all of this my love. I know this family means a great deal to you.” He looked over at me and gave me a very half hearted smile. Then he frowned again..

“I should go find Ryan to let him know.” He said. Ryan is their son. He’s mated and off in his own hut, thankfully.

“I can go with you if you’d like.” I offered, concern of how Ryan might take this. The man is about to learn some rather horrible information, he won’t have any of his family left at this point. I believe Dwain has no intentions of returning.

“I think I should handle this one on my own, but thank you my love. You should go be with our babies. I’ll join you soon.” He said as he turned and walked out.
