A twig snaps under my feet. Colt whips his head around to give me a look.
“Sorry” I mouth to him. He holds his finger up to his lips telling me to be quiet.

How is he so quiet? Watching his every step I can see he is quickly planning his steps while walking slowly making sure he doesn’t make too much noise. I’m clearly not that great at it. He’s even
stepping on twigs not breaking them!
How the hell does he do this? Make himself weightless? I can hear steps off to the side of us,
which seems to be where he’s leading us. The scent seems to be deer.
He stopped walking suddenly, making me bump into him lightly.
He doesn’t move, like the brick wall he is. He stares ahead and puts his finger over his lips again. I look forward, but I don’t see anything. At first anyways. After a moment I could see branches
move, then I realized those branches were antlers.
He stayed absolutely still and just watched a moment then signaled for me to quietly ready my bow. I’ve shot with one before, but it was always at a target, not a real animal so I’m hoping I Dont
screw this up.
I ready my bow and take aim. As I’m aiming down getting ready to pull the bow string back Colt quickly puts a hand over my mouth and tugs me into his chest wrapping his arms around me.
I know better than to make any sound but this is not what I was expecting. I looked around but didn’t see anything. I felt like he was screwing with me.
Then, the giant Bush next to us moved. Only, it wasn’t a bush. A very large brown bear slowly moved away from right next to us to what was going to be my kill.
I was standing so close to it. The bear was blended in with the other brown and golden bushes all around us, all that was between me and that bear was a thing and tall tree.
Once the bear was making its kill Colt quick and quietly moved us away and out of sight.
Once we got far enough away from it he let go of my hand that I didn’t even realize he was holding.
“I haven’t seen a bear out here in years.” He said as he laughed. “I can honestly say I didn’t expect that to happen today.” He was still being very quiet, but I could tell he was shocked.
He quickly linked the pack, “Grizzly spotted about a mile away from pack lines. Be careful out
there.”
“Are you sure?” Someone responded, “Grizzlies haven’t been around here in a long time.”

“Oh I’m sure, we were less than five feet away from t.” He answered back.
“Could be a good hunt.” Levi replied.

“Get a party together, three others and I’ll join. No mistakes, that’s a lot of meat and fur we could
use.” Colt responded.
He stopped me and knelt down. I looked ahead of him and saw it. A buck. Beautiful creatures really, but today he looks delicious.
I readied my bow and took aim. He glanced over at him and he nodded for me to continue. I looked back, pulled back the string and breathed. When I shot a worry hit me like I knew I missed, but then Colt popped up, “Nice shot babe.” He whispered as he started walking over to it.
I saw it jump up and run so I thought I missed, but I guess I didn’t. We walked up to it just a little ways past where it was when I shot it.
“I thought I missed.” I whispered, smiling hugely.
“Pull your knife and come here.” He said as he knelt down. He motioned for me to sit basically in
his lap.
“Wrap your arm around him and cut his throat right here.” He motioned to where I should cut. I was
confused.
“Why?” I asked.
“In case he’s suffering.” He said.
I did as he said, but that was harder to do than shooting him. Then I heard Colt behind me as he
placed his hands on the deer from behind me.
“Thank you majestic one for this honorable hunt. My pack will honor your sacrifice by feeding from your meat. May your spirit be embraced by the moon goddess.” He said.
“That’s beautiful.” I said to him as he began to sit up.
“You should always thank your kill for the sacrifice of its life to feed our people. My father taught
me that.
He plopped down between the legs of the deer and started cutting him open. After a moment he
pulled out the heart of the deer.
He’s held out the heart to me and said, “This part might not be so beautiful.” I just looked at him.
“Eat it.” He said, still holding out the heart to me.
“Umm excuse me?” I said, I know he’s not seriously telling me to eat this, right now, while there’s
still warm blood all over it.

“You eat the heart of your kills, this is a tradition.” He said, smiling but I could tell he was serious.
“You don’t actually think I can do that, so you? That’s gross.” I said.
“Don’t be such a girl.” He laughed, “Our ancestors believed that you’d gain important qualities from
your kill by doing this. Strength, agility, knowledge, bravery, whatever traits your kill had. They believed it’s what made us good warriors when it came to battle.” Oh my goddess he really
expects me to do this.
“The whole thing?” I asked. The look of disgust is apparent on my face, I can’t hide it.
“You know it’s wolf nature to eat or kills fresh. It’s only the modern wolf that actually cooks it and
prepares it with more foods like vegetables.” He advised me as I grabbed the warm, soft heart.
I just stared at it, tradition is something this pack holds dear to them. No pun intended. So, I guess I have to give this a try.
I hesitantly bit down on the heart. The blood gushing out as I ripped a bite off. The texture was disgusting feeling. That mixed with the thick blood running down the sides of my mouth and all
over my hands was making this way too hard.
I gagged through it and swallowed. I looked over at Colt and his look was weird to me. He was
prideful, happy, and oddly seduced by this.
Though it was incredibly disgusting feeling, the taste was actually pretty good. I gagged a few
more times getting through the heart but I finally ate the whole thing.
Then, I found myself feeling quite aroused. When I looked over at Colt, I could see he was feeling it
too.
