The Big Sky Alpha novel Chapter 95

COLT POV

I learned a lot yesterday talking with River’s friends. Grace and Trish opened up very freely to me about what happened. I guess knowing your best friend is dying really makes you reconsider things.

They clearly regret what they were doing, though I don’t fault or blame them they surely do.

I’m sure River doesn’t either. It’s pretty normal for a teenager to rebel and think they want something different. I did it, but I don’t think I know of anyone that didn’t come right back after a day or two.

This is the quest possible case scenario and frankly having vampires on this continent is an issue we weren’t aware of let alone this far inward and in the mountains where there’s not a whole lot of people is more concerning than acting I can think of.

Populations in this part of the country are primarily werewolf with some human towns and shaker cities here and there.

Makes it seem rather odd since they require human blood to live.

Wolf blood doesn’t do anything for them, so the only reason to bite a wolf is to kill, and not just kill. It is to make us suffer. I heard a story once that out but is toxic to them too, but I’ve never heard it again so whether that’s true or not is still not known.

Grace said that going to town was her idea, she was given a harsh talking to by her parents the day before because she’d been complaining about how horrible life is here. She was told last year when all the other packs were here about how they have certain technologies that make life easier for them. She felt her parents just didn’t understand that we don’t have technology like they do, when her parents explained to her why we don’t use technology like they do she felt they were lying just so they didn’t have to use it.

I understood, it was the way I saw things not too long ago myself. She said that when they got half way down she started feeling like it was a bad idea, but she kept going because she convinced River and Trish that they all needed to just try it out. She thought about having them go back until day, but she also said that night is the best time to leave because most people are sleeping or at least indoors.

Actually got me wondering if they were spotted by the guards. I’ve got Levi asking about that today.

Grace broke down when she started talking about the attack. Trish described it very similarly, and honestly it sounds like a nightmare they’ll never forget.

They got to where they could see what they said they thought was street lights, but they also said they’d only been talking about two hours in human form and they weren’t walking quickly. This makes me think they still had a ways to go, so I’m not sure what the lights were that they saw, not to mention there’s no street lights on the road at the bottom, not until town anyways and that’s a ways away from there.

The closer they got to the lights they heard branches breaking. At first they thought maybe a deer or something but the more it happened they began getting concerned that it might be rogue. All three girls just recently got their wolves in this current year, so having to take on rogues seemed a little scary to them especially since there weren’t any stronger more experienced wolves with them.

By this point they decided they made a mistake and they needed to get home, but then they heard a voice, a female voice that oddly made them feel safe. Trish described it as almost angelic because of how it made them feel, even without seeing the woman.

Both Grace and Trish described the woman as the most beautiful person they’d ever seen. Long dark hair that blew in the breeze like she was perfectly painted.

They said her skin was golden looking, but also pale. Her eyes were very dark and she wore jeans and a black shirt. They said nothing about this woman seemed dangerous to them, she just kept telling them they were safe, they were okay.

Then out of nowhere someone came up behind each of them and grabbed them. Even then, the woman told them it was okay they’d be fine. The men grabbing them were safe and her voice made them relax. Trish described it as a trance. They ask watched as River was bit and even though inside they knew they were terrified, their reactions were mild. Grace couldn’t describe it in any other way than her body was numb and her brain was unable to tell her how she could react, but she remembered tears falling down her face.

They both said there were told everything would be okay and they just needed to hurry back home and get River to her parents. They felt like they had to do just that. They walked away from the attackers feeling calm and relaxed, even River. About ten minutes before they got to River’s parents it was like they walked through a barrier and their sense came back to them.

They began crying hysterically, River kept yelling she was going to die, they ran quickly to her parents and they’ve been reliving the whole thing over and over again since then.

The whole thing sounds horrible for an adult let alone a young girl.

I haven’t told Freya yet, she’s taking this all pretty hard. Watching River know she’s about to die and nothing can be done to help her is a feeling Freya is unfortunately familiar with.

I never really thought about it, since she’s just been very thankful and happy with us since that night, she never really dealt with the emotions from that experience. I know I did, but that was because I lived through losing her, there was actual physical damage from that in my soul. For Freya, her soul was still intact so her damage was all internal. Well, I guess other than the healing from having the babies and being ripped open.

Freya didn’t sleep much last night, she kept having nightmares about her death. I held her all night so she could at least get some rest. Today she’s determined she’s going to get her abilities down and talk to the goddess because she feels that it will not only help River, but it will bring her some kind of closure about what happened to her.

I’ll tell Freya what the girls told me tonight. For today, I’m just helping her. I’ll be going to check on River’s condition when I force Freya to take a break and eat lunch though. Something tells me she’ll want to go with me. She’s not having luck with communing with the goddess yet today, maybe seeing River again will help with that but then again maybe it will make it worse.

I guess we’ll be finding out.
