The Day I Quit Him (Autumn and Mars) novel Chapter 30

Chapter 30

Autumn’s lip twitched

She didn’t buy for a second that Mars’s sudden concern for her and the baby was genuine.

After all, she’d been going to her prenatal appointments alone ever since they found out she was pregnant.

The man was only focused on how happy he was that he and Lydia were finally having a child.

Why would he spare a thought for her, the surrogate mother?

It’s fine.

Owen Bennett’s face suddenly flashed through her mind.

The baby’s actual father had never acted particularly invested, but he’d noticed every little detail and made sure everything was perfectly arranged.

Autumn hadn’t been lying, either. She really had already eaten breakfast

It was a special meal prepared by a toptier nutritionist Owen had hired specifically for her and the baby’s needs.

The truth was, Autumn had always been someone who paid attention to the details.

But in three years of marriage, Mars was so thoughtless he couldn’t even remember their anniversary without a reminder.

And when he did remember, he’d just halfass it by buying some random gift and mumbling, Happy Anniversary,to get it over with.

Autumn only found out later that every year, Lydia received expensive gifts that Mars had personally picked out for her birthday.

The difference between being loved and not being loved was just that obvious.

Autumn desperately tried not to dwell on these details she’d ignored for so long.

But sometimes, you just can’t help it.

Once the ugly truth was out, all those little things she’d overlooked started connecting in her mind, forming one heartbreaking picture after another.

It made every breath feel like a stab of pain.

But the more it hurt, the faster the wound would heal.

Good to hear.

Mars clearly wasn’t that interested in the baby’s wellbeing. Once he got Autumn’s answer, he just sat down in a nearby

chair.

Autumn could tell he had something on his mind.

But she refused to take the bait.

Finally, Mars could only run his hand awkwardly over the bed rail and ask, So, you should be getting discharged

tomorrow, right?

That contract at the office is still waiting for you to handle it.

A knowing smile spread across Autumn’s face.

No wonder he was being so attentive and bringing her breakfast today.

It was all for some company project.

Did you go apologize?

Instead of answering his question directly, Autumn threw one back at him..

Huh?

The confusion in Mars’s eyes didn’t look fake. Apologize for what?

Autumn knew Mars was an idiot, but she hadn’t realized his arrogance reached this level.

You v

were late. You’re not going to do anything about it?

You didn’t even apologize right away?

Mars rubbed his nose awkwardly. WellI thought you would handle it

Suddenly, Autumn was done putting up with it.

She snatched the breakfast Mars had brought and, without a second’s hesitation, threw it right at him.

The scalding soup splattered all over Mars, making him yelp in pain.

*Autumn, are you crazy?

Autumn let out a cold laugh. Am I the crazy one, or are you?

Mars, what is wrong with you? Did a zombie eat your brain? You messed up, and you didn’t even bother to apologize afterward?

Who the hell do you think you are? We were the ones begging them to work with us on this project. What gives you the right to be so arrogant?

Mars hated it most when Autumn got aggressive like this.

As if she knew more about business than he did.

Althoughshe actually did.

But he was Mr. Wright, the real CEO of Cloudbreak!

Autumn was just a secretary. Her job was to do all the work for him and make sure he had nothing to worry about.

What gave her the right to always act like she was better than him?

She was his wife! She was supposed to know her place, wasn’t she? Otherwise, where would that leave his pride as the man of the house? man of the

In that respect, Autumn was nothing like Lydia,

Lydia would never humiliate him like this, she always made him feel accomplished,

At that thought, Mars’s expression soured. Isn’t this your job? I’m telling you, Autumn, if you can’t save this contract, you can pack your shit and get out!

Mars thought this would be enough to threaten her, but to his surprise, Autumn just nodded matteroffactly. Fine by me. I was thinking I’d like to focus on the pregnancy and quit working anyway.

Mars was stunned.

Youyou’re serious?

Autumn gave him a look and, without another word, reached for her laptop to type up her resignation letter.

Mars quickly grabbed her hand. Alright, Autumn, stop messing around!

I was just joking, and you took it seriously. Geez. I guess we really are an old married couple nowyou don’t pay any attention to me anymore, you can’t even tell when I’m kidding.

The fucking scumbag was trying to turn this back on her?

Autumn raised an eyebrow, her eyes full of mocking laughter. But you looked pretty serious just now. Are you sure you were joking?

After alldidn’t you already give my chief secretary position to Lydia? If you really like her so much, you can just get her to do it.

Hearing this, a look of understanding dawned on Mars’s face.

So that’s what this is about. You’re just jealous of your sister, aren’t you?

Come on, what’s there to be jealous about? She’s your own sister. It’s only natural for me, as her brotherinlaw, to look

out for her.

I was too harsh just now. How about this, what if I buy you a new bag?

You already promised you’d help me. It’s not a good look to back out now, is it?
