Gideon and William didn’t know how to play cards, so with Rodger, Danelle, and Emmett, they were one player short. That’s why they called Leeanne over to fill in.

Leeanne wasn’t much of a player either. Her grandparents were pros, but she’d only picked up a few basics from watching

them.

She sat down, and the four of them started playing William watched from the sidelines, while Gideon grabbed a chair and sat by the railing, soaking up the sun.

He wasn’t interested in the game at all.

At some point, Apprentice 23 showed up and stood silently behind Leeanne, watching the game for quite a while.

Finally, she couldn’t hold back anymore. She pointed at Leeanne’s tiles and said, “Seriously? Emmett’s just waiting for the ive–dot tile, and you just had to play it!”

Leeanne’s eyes sparkled. She pulled Apprentice 23 over and said, “Did you figure it out? Come on, play for me!”

Apprentice 23 plopped herself down in Leeanne’s seat, while Leeanne stood behind to watch.

In less than a minute, Apprentice 23 pushed her tiles forward and announced, “cards!”

Emmett howled, “Leeanne, if you hadn’t played that five–dot tile earlier, I would’ve won right away! Oh man, this little…”

Apprentice 23 shot him a look.

Emmett immediately switched gears, grinning awkwardly. “Oh man, this little cutie is so fired up playing cards!”

She dragged her bean bag chair up and set it off to the side, then sat down next to Danelle and the others, scrolling through her holoscreen and checking the chat.

Most of the messages in the chat were from players on Apprentice 49’s wooden boat. You could tell they were hyped, and some were even sharing pictures.

Some were grilling meat, others were boiling water, and everyone was laughing and chatting while enjoying their food.

The firelight made everyone’s smiles shine even brighter.

Seeing scenes like this, tons of players couldn’t help but wish they were part of it.
