Chapter 20

Leeanne texted: [I made a net myself.] Rodger sent her another string of clapping emojis.

Jessica was already blowing up Leeanne’s phone with messages. [Seriously, Leeanne, you’re insane. You already soloed a Tier I mutant today?

[Your fan club is getting out of control, but don’t forget, I was your first one. I’m one of a kind. Leeanne, did you score any good loot today?]

Leeanne replied: [I’ll tell you all about it tonight.] Messages of congratulations also came from Danelle and William. The rest were from strangers, which Leeanne ignored.

It was almost 3:30 PM, and she needed to be back on the raft by 6 PM. She couldn’t afford to waste any more time.

Leeanne hurried back to the mine. This time, it was much quieter inside. Even the little mice that used to pop up every now and then were nowhere to be seen.

She made her way to the treasure chest, carefully checking the area for any signs of danger before finally opening the wooden box.

The system voice came: [Wooden box opened. You’ve obtained 1 steel trap blueprint, 1 brazier blueprint, 1 pack of 10 sausages, 20 pieces of ginger, and 20 iron. Added to your backpack.]

That was a huge haul. Leeanne opened her backpack and saw that it was almost full again. Seeing her backpack stuffed to the brim, she felt awesome.

She had two blueprints and planned to check them out later when she was back on the raft. She pulled out her iron pickaxe and started mining coal.

The rest went smoothly. Finally, boosted by the Gatherer’s Luck effect, she raked in a whopping 260 coal chunks.

This was a small coal mine, and she had mined maybe fifty or sixty times tops. Without Gatherer’s Luck, she would’ve barely scraped together fifty or sixty coal chunks. She was more than satisfied.

By the time Leeanne stepped out of the mine, it was already past five. She hurried back toward the raft.

As she walked along, a notification popped up. [Survival Tip: Granite rock detected. Do you want to collect it?]

Granite just lying around on the surface? Come on, that’s ridiculous, she thought. Leeanne shook her head. Whatever, it’s just a game. No need to overthink it!

She figured that since the game was dropping hints, it had to be worth it. She immediately pulled out her iron pickaxe and started digging.

Leeanne dug up several granite rocks, and thanks to Gatherer’s Luck, she managed to score a total of 12 pieces.

After collecting the granite, she kept heading back. Nearing the beach, she passed a mound of yellowish soil that looked unlike ordinary dirt.

A notification popped up: [Survival Tip: Loam soil detected. Do you want to collect it?]

She still had a little time, so Leeanne took out her iron shovel and dug a few times, getting over 20 clumps of soil. When the time felt right, she hurried back to the raft

As soon as she stepped onto the raft, the system’s voice rang out. [Work time is over, adventurers. You’ve worked hard all

Leeanne’s backpack was stuffed to the brim again. She unloaded everything onto the raft and decided to take a well- deserved break. What a busy day, she thought.

She ate two wholewheat bread rolls and drank half a bottle of water, then checked her wound again. In just a short while, the bite on her ankle was almost healed.

She figured she’d be able to take a shower in less than an hour. After a whole day of crawling through mines and chopping wood, she was filthy from head to toe.

It was such a waste of her new tracksuit. Luckily, her clothes from yesterday were already dry, so she could put on something clean soon.

Even though she was exhausted, Leeanne just rested on the bench for a bit. She didn’t want to get her clean, soft bed all dirty.

Rodger texted: [You’re back? I traded 5 bottles of water and 5 loaves of bread roll for 200 nails.

[Just now, someone opened a treasure chest and scored 100 nails. She wants to swap them for three packs of pasta. Are you cool with that?]

Leeanne replied, [Yeah, go for it. I’ll give you the items.] She was determined to expand the raft to 300 feet today. After trading with Rodger, Leeanne scored 300 nails.

Her current resources were: 510 wood, 340 nails, 28 iron, 7 strawberries, 1 roll of rope, 1 piece of cloth, 1 sandwich, 51 plastic, 3 wholewheat bread roll, 3 packs of pasta, 1 bag of oats (5 pounds), 3 bass, 1 squid, etc.

Her raft was only 90 feet right now, and to expand it to 300 feet, she’d need 700 pieces of wood and 700 nails.

She was still missing 290 wood and 360 nails. That was quite a gap. Maybe I should just wait a couple of days before expanding?she thought.

But as soon as that idea crossed her mind, Leeanne shut it down. She had noticed that being one step ahead often led to rare rewards, like the first island landing and the first mutated beast kill.

But how am I supposed to trade for wood and nails?she wondered. She could split water into 2 fluid ounce portions to trade, but other supplies were harder to divide.

Wait, watermelon! What’s the point of hoarding watermelons? Just eat them, sell them, save the seeds, and soon enough, I’ll have a whole new batch, she thought.

Leeanne pulled out a watermelon, only to realize she didn’t have a knife. With no other option, she cleaned her axe and carefully sliced the watermelon open. She cut the first one into eight slices.

She gave a slice to Rodger because he had helped her out today. Another slice went to William, who was always sending her supplies. She already considered William her most trusted friend.

Rodger messaged her right away: [This is delicious. I’m sending you a fruit knife. Use it to slice. You can trade watermelon slices for wood and nails. Plenty of people will bite J

He quickly added (Don’t let all the whining in the chat fool you. There are plenty of players just quietly leveling up. They’ve got plenty of wood and nails to spare.

[Ask for a high price. Your watermelon is big. You can cut it into 32 slices. Charge 10 wood or 10 nails per slice, and I guarantee you’ll have no shortage of takers.]
