Come on, it’s just a rat. Besides, there’s a treasure chest in there,Leeanne thought. After a quick thought, she walked to a patch of thick weeds and hacked off a big bundle with her iron shovel.

The weeds were tough and fibrous. Even with the shovel, she had to strike several times to cut them. They were about six to ten feet long.

They were perfect for weaving into a net. Leeanne planned to use the net to trap the silverback rat.

When Leeanne was a kid, she used to visit her grandparents a lot. Her grandfather, Edgar Dillion, knew how to weave nets and catch rodents and birds, and she had picked up a thing or two.

But compared to Edgar, she was still way behind. Thinking about this, Leeanne couldn’t help but miss her grandparents.

They were almost seventy and still in pretty good health. Even when she was caught up in the daily grind, she always made sure to call them every week.

Yesterday was the weekend, her regular call day, and she knew they must be worried sick not being able to reach her.

I wonder how this socalled game is supposed to take care of the elderly, she thought. While her mind was wandering, Leeanne had finished weaving the net.

All the while, her ankle was throbbing like crazy. She had wrapped the wound with dry grass; the bleeding had slowed to a stop, but the pain was just as bad.

Fortunately, Leeanne wasn’t one to fuss over discomfort. She gritted her teeth and forced herself to her feet.

She tested the net with a few firm tugs, and when it held steady, she finally felt reassured.

Hopefully this silverback rat, having never been beaten or tricked by humans, will be foolish enough to walk right into the rap: Leeanne thought.

Leeanne took the net back to the mine but only walked a short way. When she guessed she was about twentyfive feet from the rat’s burrow, she stopped.

She set up the net trap and put half a custard croissant down as bait. Rats in a place like this probably have never tasted a rustard croissant before. It’s their favorite food, she thought.

Once the trap was set, Izeanne planted the torch in the ground nearby. Gripping the grasswoven rope, she backed away about twenty to twentyfive feet and ducked behind a jutting rock

From this spot, there was no way the silverback rat could see her. Crouching in the shadows, Leeanne wanted patiently

Her wound throbbed with every pulse. When Leeanne glanced down, she saw blood seeping out again. She bit back the ache and kept her eyes on that custard croissant bait.

Sure enough, the silverback rat couldn’t fight the smell of the custard croissant it crept closet, inch by inch every step full

of caution.

It kept darting nervous glances around, smithing the air, clearly torn between greed and fear, vicclog the custard croissant

over and over.

Typical skittish rat, Leeanne thought. She stayed patient Watching the silverback rat, she knew it wouldn’t be able to restit for much longer.

The silverback rat kept probing, at least seven or eight times. Each time it reached the edge of the net, it would nervously

retreat.

Leeanne stayed still. Now it was a contest of patience. After hesitating again and again, the silverback rat finally couldn’t hold back anymore.

After one last cautious sniff, it dashed over, grabbed the custard croissant, and made a run for it. It moved fast.

But Leeanne’s eyes were locked on the trap. Her reflexes were even faster. She yanked the rope, and with a thud, the net slammed down, trapping the silverback rat inside.

The silverback rat looked confused, darting frantically around inside the net. Leeanne sprinted over and pulled the net tight.

When the silverback rat spotted her, its eyes went wide. It dropped the bun and started gnawing on the grass rope. Its teeth were sharp, and a small hole appeared after a few bites.

Leeanne was ready for this. She dashed up, snatched her spear, and drove it straight at the silverback rat.

The silverback rat, now bleeding, went into a frenzy. But stuck in the net, it was helpless. Leeanne kept jabbing at it,

relentless.

As the rat darted left and right, Leeanne stabbed it several more times, leaving bloody holes through its fur. It let out squeals that felt like they had burst Leeanne’s eardrums.

The silverback rat lost its mind, but Leeanne didn’t flinch. She kept her eyes locked on it and attacked relentlessly.

Finally, the system voice came: [You have slain a Tier 1 mutated silverback rat.

As the first player in the world to kill a Tier 1 mutated beast, you can make an announcement.

After announcing, you’ll receive: 3 Healing Salves, Constitution +1, Strength +1, Agility +1. Make the announcement now?]

With all these rewards on the line, no way I’m passing this up,’ Leeanne thought. She didn’t hesitate for a second. Yes!

it read: [World Announcement: Player Leeanne Dillion has achieved the first kill of a Tier 1 mutated beast, the silverback rat. She has been rewarded with 3 Healing Salves, Constitution 1, Strength +1, and Agility +1.1

It read: [World Announcement: Player Leeanne Dillion has achieved the first kill of a Tier 1 mutated beast, the silverback rat She has been rewarded with 3 Healing Salves, Constitution 1, Strength 1, and Agility 1]

It read. [World Announcement: Player Leeanne Dillion has achieved the first kill of a Tier I mutated beast, the silverback rat She has been rewarded with & Healing Salves, Constitution 1, Strength 1, and Agility 1.1

The announcement flashed across the screen three times, each time with bigger, bolder, and more colorful text This is kind of flashy, Leeanne thought

Then, the system voice chimed in again You have received a Healing Salves It has been added to your backpack

That was when Leeanne finally figured out what made this announcement diferent from the last one

This time, it was a world announcement, not just a regional one. So the rewards were way better, plus she got bonus

attributes.

So I’m actually the world’s number one?Leeanne thought, a surge of pride swelling in her chest. Getting hurt was totally

worth it.
