Chapter 279
The Midnight Phantom was bound to show up again tonight.

But right now, Leeanne had Mila over. If Mila turned out to be the Midnight Phantom, things would get chaotic real quick.
So Leeanne called Emmett and Gideon too.
The more people, the safer.
And with three people keeping watch, it wouldn’t be so tiring, and nobody would end up nodding off and missing something important.
Leeanne quietly explained her plan.
Emmett immediately got pumped. “Awesome! This is gonna be exciting!”
Leeanne asked, “Aren’t you scared?”
Emmett replied, “Scared of what? You guys are here. It’s not like I’m gonna be the one in trouble!”
Emmett added, “I’m just here to watch the fun. Who knows, maybe I’ll come in handy if things get wild…” Leeanne replied, “Yeah, wasn’t expecting much from you anyway. You’re just an extra body.”
Emmett laughed.
No way they’d let Emmett take a shift, so Leeanne and Gideon handled the night watch themselves.
Leeanne would sleep through the first half of the night, then wake up at 1 a.m. to take over the night watch from Gideon.
Gideon would then get some sleep after that.
Leeanne figured the Midnight Phantom would probably show up around two or three in the morning, so that was why she set things up this way.

Once they’d sorted everything out, Leeanne grabbed a blanket, settled into the beanbag chair, and drifted off to sleep.
She’d wanted Emmett to sleep in the guest room, but he wasn’t up for it. He had his own plan. He set up a fold–out sofa bed and a blanket for himself.
Gideon didn’t need one, but Emmett had brought an extra for him anyway.
Leeanne went to bed early, Emmett only turned in after eating and drinking his fill, and Gideon stayed up all night.
Just before I a.m., Leeanne woke up, sat at the table, and gave a lazy stretch.
Maeve had prepared plenty of snacks, fruit, and even some tea–making gear. Gideon was quietly sipping his coffee, so Leeanne poured herself two cups to perk herself up..

Chapter 279
She looked around and spotted Mila sleeping in the swing chair.

Mila lay sideways across the swing chair, her thick, wavy hair cascading down and pooling on the upstai
floor.
She was using her arm as a pillow, eyes shut, sleeping peacefully.
Her long mermaid tail draped down to the floor, motionless.
“When did she fall asleep?” Leeanne whispered to Gideon.
“Exactly ten o’clock. Right on the dot!” Gideon replied.
‘Wow, she really sticks to a schedule, Leeanne thought. She’d asked the Little Seal about Mila’s bedtime before, and he’d said she always went to bed right on time. Looks like he was spot on.
Leeanne nodded quietly and sipped her coffee,
She always kept a regular sleep schedule, so after snacking and sipping coffee for a while, boredom crept
Gideon wasn’t much for conversation, and the silence, paired with Emmett’s slow, rhythmic snoring that was almost like a lullaby, made Leeanne feel drowsy all over again.
Just as Leeanne was nodding off, a sudden melody drifted through the air.
This song was completely different from anything she’d heard before.
The earlier tunes had been haunting and seductive, pulling her into a dreamy trance. But this one made her heart race with fear. A sharp pain shot through her chest, and she jolted awake.
Gideon had already stood up, but he clutched his chest, grimacing as he collapsed back into his seat.
At the same time, the Omni–Radar started blaring warnings.

The raft kept circling, desperately trying to dodge the threat, but it was useless. No matter what, it just couldn’t escape the danger.
Leeanne’s heart sank. She whipped her head around to check the swing chair upstairs.
Mila was still lying there, not even twitching, just like before.
Gideon caught Leeanne’s train of thought and said, “She hasn’t budged. It’s not her!”
The song drew nearer, seething with bottled–up fury and so oppressive it felt like the air itself was squeezing the life out of them.

Gideon did the same, and the two exchanged a stunned look, both trying to stand up.
But their bodies wouldn’t budge.
Leeanne felt a tight grip around her neck, and she forced herself to turn her head.
Not far away, she spotted a mysterious patch of deep blue, slowly drifting closer to the raft.
It was him–the Midnight Phantom. Leeanne’s heart skipped a beat.
He was the one who murdered all those people.

Leeanne desperately wanted to leap up, grab her weapon, and attack him with everything she had.
But she couldn’t summon any strength. She was suffocating, completely powerless.
Gideon was in just as much pain as Leeanne.
The Omni–Radar kept sounding alarms.

[Danger! Danger! Get off the raft now.]
Leeanne couldn’te?
all. Escaping was out of the question.
Right as her mind started to fade, a sharp, crystal–clear flute melody suddenly cut through everything.
The tune was lively and bright, completely overpowering that oppressive song and clearing out all the overpowering that oppressive song and clearing out all the frustration suffocating Leeanne.
She could finally breathe again.
She took deep breaths, her gaze automatically going to the swing chair upstairs.
There, Mila was sitting upright, clutching the Rainbow–Cloud Flute, letting a stream of clear flute music fill
the air.
‘It’s her!‘ Leeanne thought. ‘She saved us!‘
Suddenly, Gideon sprang to his feet, bolting toward the edge of the raft like an arrow.
That was right where the Midnight Phantom stood.
In a flash, Gideon brought his heavy blade crashing down on that patch of deep blue closing in on the raft.
Leeanne sprang to her feet, cracking her Viper Whip straight at the target.
The unmistakable sound of something hitting the water echoed out.
The deep blue shape sank beneath the surface, and Gideon plunged in after it without a second thought.

‘Damn, that’s gutsy!‘ Leeanne thought.

Without a second thought, Leeanne dashed to the edge of the raft and plunged into the water after Gideon.
The system kept the water warm, so it actually felt pretty comfortable.
But all they could see were fish of every size. There was no sign of the Midnight Phantom anywhere.
It was pitch black and dangerous in the water. After searching for a bit and coming up empty, they headed back to the raft.
When they got back, Emmett was sitting on his comfy sofa bed, still looking shaken as he rubbed his chest and neck. “Man, I just had the worst nightmare. I dreamed I fell into the ocean without any gear and almost drowned.”
Leeanne said, “Yeah, you pretty much almost died for real!”
Gideon added, “Being clueless really pays off, huh?”
Emmett stared at them in shock. “Why are both of you on night duty? Isn’t that overkill? Wait, you actually went swimming? Who fishes at this hour?”
He was still half–asleep and totally out of it.
Leeanne nudged him. “Just keep sleeping, Emmett.”
Mila walked downstairs, looking serious. “Was that… an evil mermaid just now?”
Leeanne turned to Gideon, her eyes searching for answers. All she’d seen was a patch of deep blue–she couldn’t really make out what it was.
Gideon nodded. “Yeah, I think it was a mermaid.”
Leeanne took the chance to ask, “Mila, what’s an evil mermaid, anyway?”
Even though the guide had some explanations, she still felt like she needed to get the real story.
Mila gave a sarcastic smile, running her fingers through her long hair. “Isn’t that what I am?”
