The Endgame Chronicles (by Hugh White) novel Chapter 104

Chapter 104

Leonard took the ID card from Hayley.

His number was 002, making him the second citizen of Haylight Base.

He stared at the number for a moment, a warmth spreading through his chest. He figured that must be the place he held in Hayley’s heart. Right after 001, which was Hayley herself.

Hayley seeing him as the person closest to her was a strange feeling.

But then again, the two of them really did depend on each other to survive this apocalypse.

Since she ranked him this high, he decided that she was the closest person to him from now on

Just then, Hayley whistled at Summer, who was chewing on a bone. “Summer! Come here! Time to get your ID card!”

“Woof! Woof!” Summer dropped the bone and ran over.

Hayley took a card on a string, slipped it into the slot on Summer’s combat vest, and tied a neat knot. The number engraved on it read “001”.

Leonard blinked. “Wait… Summer is 001?” 1

“Of course,” Hayley replied without hesitation.

“Then… What about you, Boss?”

“I’m 000.”

Leonard just stared at her.

There was even a 000? He felt like a joke.

Hayley didn’t stop there. She made ID tags for all her dogs. From 003 to 017, each got a custom tag stamped with the Haylight Base emblem tucked into their combat vests.

To Hayley, her dogs were no different from people.

They were her teammates, the ones she trusted the most. So, of course, they had to have official Haylight Base IDs.

Two days went by in a blur. Hayley spent them busy organizing the construction of the base.

Building and managing a settlement was complicated, especially in the early stages. She had to figure out how to provide water, power, and basic supplies for everyone.

Back when it was just Anthony’s family, their needs were minor. If something was missing, they could just make do.

But now, with more residents forming a little community, basic living conditions had to be solved properly.

Hayley installed the 100 solar panels she’d won earlier in the villa district, giving the residents a stable power supply.

Electricity for the area was finally handled.

If there were any issues later, people could just call the shelter instead of having Cloudia running all over the place.

As for water, the neighborhood was still connected to the city’s old supply lines.

Before, Cloudia’s family collected rainwater to get by, but with this many people, that wasn’t going to cut it.

Hayley organized a group to dig a well and linked it to the water system in her shelter.

The system had been reinforced by the Super Lord System and was perfectly safe. The water problem was fixed in

no time.

With both electricity and water secured, the residents’ trust in Hayley soared. Their sense of belonging grew stronger, too.

Life under Hayley’s lead was only getting better.

Next came the issue of resource exchange.

Hayley’s manpower was limited, and sending people out to trade supplies wasted too much time and effort.

So, she set up a market inside the base.

Besides the essential items, on the 1st and 15th of every month, she would hold a base market day where everyone could shop and trade freely.
