Chapter 109
For a split second, the young man froze, then his eyes widened in disbelief.
“Boss?!”
Hayley blinked. It was Derek, the guy who used to end up in tears every time she pissed him off.
“Leonard!”
“Ms. Reid!”

The other guy pinned under the dogs, Gavin, also recognized them. Both men looked absolutely stunned to see Hayley and Leonard here.
Then, from the shadows ahead, came a shout. “Did the elevator get here yet? We can’t hold the line much longer”
“Ethan, look who just showed up!” Derek called out immediately.
Ethan, heavily armed, ran over. When he saw Hayley, his tense expression broke into pure shock and relief.
“B-Boss!” His voice trembled slightly with excitement.
“Why are you all standing around? Didn’t the elevator get here yet?”
Before anyone could answer, a sharp, commanding female voice rang out. A woman in military uniform came running toward them. Her eyes narrowed the moment she saw the new arrivals.
“Who the hell are you?”
“Captain Barnes, they’re our friends!” Ethan quickly explained.
“Friends?”
The woman’s expression twisted with disbelief, especially when she saw the dogs Hayley brought take down her team members. Hayley herself was pressing a gun to the head of a special forces soldier.
That didn’t exactly look like something a friend would do.
But there was no time to question anything now.
From deep in the darkness behind her came a blood-curdling scream. It sounded almost human, yet there was something animal in it, too.
It sounded like something that had torn open its throat. It was hard to imagine what creature produced that raw, guttural cry.
Boom!
A blast from a heavy weapon shattered the darkness before Hayley, the blazing fire lighting up her field of vision. What she saw made her stomach drop. A massive wave of zombies came pouring out from the far end of the hall. Some were in white hazmat suits, others still wearing pale-blue hospital gowns. They looked like demons clawing their way up from hell, surging toward the soldiers holding the line ahead.
Gunfire filled the air. The soldiers emptied round after round, but it barely slowed the zombies down. Unless you hit one right in the head, nothing stopped them. These things were faster, stronger, and far more brutal than the ones outside.

One of the zombies slammed into a fully armed soldier, its claws slicing straight through his reinforced gear. In one savage pull, it ripped open his chest and tore out his still-beating heart before devouring it whole.
There was no holding this line.
“Move it!” Hayley shouted, dragging her dogs and bolting for the elevator.
At the same time, a familiar male voice came from ahead. “Get into the elevator! Fall back!”
The command came almost in sync with Hayley’s. Derek’s team immediately rushed into the elevator, laying down cover fire for the teammates still behind them.
Within seconds, Hayley spotted a few familiar faces: Caleb, Logan, and Liam. So it really was Liam’s squad. Along with them were a handful of soldiers she didn’t recognize.
When they burst into the elevator and saw Hayley standing there, everyone froze for a split second, clearly startled. But there was no time to talk. Every second counted as they scrambled to pull back.
Behind them, a swarm of mutated zombies came tearing down the hallway.
One group was charging forward, while another was falling back. Just as the last of them crammed into the elevator, a sharp alarm went off before anyone could catch their breath.
