The Endgame Chronicles (by Hugh White) novel Chapter 112

Chapter 112

“If we don’t make it back, youcan use this to get yourselves out,” Liam said.

Hayley took the card right away, nary a hint of hesitation.

Nadia’s face twisted in shock. “You can’t just…”

Before she could finish, Liam cut her off, his tone like ice. “Captain Barnes, just focus on your job.”

A soft chime sounded as the elevator reached B2.

Nadia had no choice but to shut up, though her expression was darker than a storm cloud. She turned and glared daggers at Hayley.

Hayley only grinned and waved the access card Liam had given her, taunting Nadia on purpose.

That nearly made Nadia explode.

Nadia’s father was the current director of Base K1. No one had ever dared treat her this way before. What’s more, Hayley had even kicked her out of the elevator earlier!

Once this mission was over, Nadia swore she was going to make Hayley pay for that.

Ding!

The elevator doors slowly opened.

Everyone inside instantly went on alert. Liam and the soldiers at the front raised their weapons and focused their energy, ready to strike the second anything went wrong.

Ding!

The doors slid open all the way.

They were greeted with absolute silence.

The lights were still on. Bright, white light flooded the entire underground floor.

Everything was spotless. Shiny white tiles stretched straight ahead from the elevator, leading toward a wide hallway. At the end of it was a massive glass security door. Through it, they could see several offices inside.

However, the whole place was utterly empty and deserted.

“This is it!” Nadia said excitedly, her eyes lighting up.

Liam exchanged wary looks with his teammates, then carefully stepped out of the elevator.

They moved with the precision of trained special forces, checking every angle before signaling the others to follow.

Once the area seemed safe, everyone else filed out.

Hayley came out as well. She told her two dogs to stay close to the elevator, then strolled after Liam’s team with Leonard and the other dogs at her side, as if they were just sightseeing.

When Liam noticed them following, he turned and frowned. “Why are you tagging along?”

“Just walking around, checking things out,” Hayley said casually.

The others just stared at her.

Seriously? They were in the middle of a top-level mission, but these two were treating it like a stroll in the park!

They felt like Hayley wasn’t taking this seriously.

On the other hand, Hayley thought that this was perfect.

She had come to take control of this research facility, and now, this squad was clearing the way for her. She might as well use them to map out the place.

Clearly, this group knew the facility well. Following them would save Hayley a ton of effort.

“You don’t need to worry about us. We won’t get in your way. You do your thing,” Hayley said politely to Liam, the leader of the walking cannon fodder.

If things went south, she would just back out and give up on the mission. She was always “reasonable” like that.
