The Endgame Chronicles (by Hugh White) novel Chapter 121

Chapter 121

Chapter 121

Just then, Hayley saw everyone who had charged forward suddenly turn back and start running the other way.

They were firing off the last of their flash grenades and ammo, covering Liam and Nadia as the two broke through the crowd.

Through the chaos, Liam caught sight of Hayley. His eyes lit up, as if he was silently thanking her for the warning.

Because of her, they had all made it out alive.

Liam really did owe her one. If it weren’t for Hayley, he probably wouldn’t have made it through the day.

This mission was one of the highest-level operations under Base K1’s triple S-class order. Liam had been sent to a pharmaceutical research facility to retrieve old data and lab instruments that might contain clues about the zombie virus,

records that existed from before the outbreak.

The goal was to uncover the secret of how the energy within the zombie crystal Cores could be extracted.

Before the outbreak, the government had already detected traces of this strange dormant virus in several regions.

At first, they mistook it for a new strain of influenza. But when scientists ran experiments on lab mice, they discovered something completely new, something the world had never seen before.

To their shock, the virus seemed to contain a kind of immortal energy, capable of forcing cells out of their natural state and keeping them alive indefinitely.

If they could have decoded it, it might have been the greatest scientific breakthrough in human history.

But before they could even begin to understand it, everything fell apart.

The so-called immortal virus didn’t grant eternal life; it created zombies.

Even though the government had tried to prepare for the worst, humanity still couldn’t stop the total collapse that followed. The virus was too powerful, way beyond human control.

In just a matter of days, the whole world was overrun.

Fortunately, there had been some groundwork laid.

This lab had been designated by Nadia’s father as the central research facility for studying the virus and stored a massive amount of data. With that data alone, he had more than enough leverage to secure a leadership position at Base K1, which was under military control.

instruments.

This time, Base Ki had assigned Liam to personally escort Nadia to retrieve those research files and instruments.

However, no one could have predicted that Nadia would turn out to be a total disaster. Every piece of intel she provided was

wrong

She claimed the facility had already been cleared of both staff and zombies. In reality, the entire Bi was full of infected personnel.

When they reached B2, she swore again that it was completely safe, that there were no zombies.

And yet, she dragged everyone straight into danger

Even with all of Liam’s skill and discipline, he couldn’t handle a liability like her

Thankfully, he had run into Hayley. If she hadn’t warned him before they went inside, Nadia’s mistakes would’ve gotten them all killed.

Liam had been as cautious as possible, moving carefully with Nadia as they searched for the files When they found the zombies, Nadia actually had the nerve to scream. She even nearly forgot to use her inventory powers to store the documents, which was

the whole point of the mission.

If it hadn’t been for Liam’s elite training and Hayley’s timely advice, they both would’ve been dead. Operating at peak special forces precision, Liam had managed to eliminate several of the child zombies in seconds, buying Nadia just enough time to grab
