The Endgame Chronicles (by Hugh White) novel Chapter 146

Chapter 146

After Griffin tricked her, Hayley stayed holed up in the base for a long time.

She was so annoyed that she didn’t even feel like expanding her territory.

Every day, she handled the base’s chores, managed its development, and spent time with the dogs who would never hurt or betray her.

The dogs were the only ones who brought her warmth.

Time flew, and it had already been over three months since the apocalypse began. Hayley’s base finally reached stable production.

At first, the residents planted fast-growing crops like bean sprouts, lettuce, and kale. Now they were moving on to mid-term, high-yield crops like potatoes and sweet potatoes.

The fields she had opened up were planted with a mix of corn, wheat, barley, and a large variety of vegetables such as tomatoes, cucumbers, cabbage, and spinach, as well as some delicate fruits like strawberries and blueberries.

Hayley had shared almost all her seeds for them to plant.

Anthony, a wood-element Gifted, handled the early-stage cultivation of all crops. Julian and a few others, who were strength and speed-enhanced Gifteds, took care of expanding the fields. The rest pitched in with planting and tending.

Plus, Hayley’s territory had been upgraded by the system, so all crops grew faster and produced more than usual.

Finally, her base was generating real output.

This meant Haylight Base had survived the toughest early stage.

Before, she had been supplying everything for the base herself. Now, the residents were producing and contributing back to her.

The resources they produced flowed into Hayley’s warehouse through the points exchange system. Hayley settled their points while setting aside some daily necessities for the residents to trade for.

No matter how much they exchanged, they could never spend all their points. The points left in their accounts were for wealth

accumulation.

During the apocalypse, when resources were scarce, the residents could mainly produce food.

Hayley used the “industrial-agriculture disparity” to balance the points in circulation.

Conomic

This method exploited the huge gap between industrial goods and agricultural goods, creating a sort of economic leverage.

For example, Hayley might buy one pound of grain for 1 point. Then she sold a brand new shirt to a resident for 100 points.

That meant the shirt was “worth” 100 pounds of grain.

In reality, it wasn’t worth that much, but that was the system.

By increasing the price of industrial goods and lowering the price of basic food, Hayley could recover the residents’ accumulated wealth efficiently

Residents could only produce food, everything else had to be purchased from Hayley So even though a shit was expensive, once residents had enough points, they were still willing to buy it

It helped balance out the value of their labor and production

Of course, the residents of Haylight Base benefited massively from this system

While other bases worried about where their next meal would come from or how to stay safe, Haylight Base residents could eat
