Chapter 147
Hayley made sure her residents always lived in a relatively comfortable environment.
On top of that, she started raising pigs.
Once the sweet potatoes were ready for harvest, Hayley released a batch of piglets for the residents to raise.
She considered her limited labor force and realized building a full-scale pig farm with hired workers would waste resources. Plus, a base-run pig farm wouldn’t fully motivate the residents to care for the pigs, and it would require her to prepare special
feed.
So she decided to distribute the piglets according to the number of residents, letting each person “adopt” a pig.
When the piglets were assigned, they were weighed, and then weighed again at slaughter. Residents were paid 10 points per pound of pork and also received one-tenth of the meat when the pigs were sold
This method hugely motivated the residents to raise pigs.
Every day, the residents worked with more enthusiasm. They produced extra food, fed the pigs with leftovers, and constantly checked on their health, terrified of raising them poorly or losing any. 1
By giving residents some ownership, the risks were shared between them and the base.
This also strengthened their sense of belonging. These were their lands and their livestock, so they weren’t going anywhere.
With stable production and the addition of animal husbandry, Hayley’s base prosperity level shot up.
The base prosperity level increased slightly every day, but this time, it broke through level 500, earning the title of “Township.”
The next milestone would be level 1,000, the “County” title.
Hayley usually ignored these titles and rarely paid attention to the system’s awards, but when she reached the Township level, she discovered something shocking.
The points contributed by her residents had doubled!
All residents of Hayley’s territory, aside from the initial 100 points they contributed when joining, gave 1 system point per day each.
With 19 residents, that was 19 points daily, even without going out to fight zombies or expand her territory.
Now that the base prosperity level had reached Township, each resident contributed 2 points per day.
Having 19 residents meant getting 38 points daily.
ľ
Don’t underestimate this small number. If Hayley leveled up enough or had more residents, she could accumulate huge amounts of points just by staying put.
As the base developed, the contribution from residents would only grow.
Her long-term goal of developing a zombie virus inhibitor suddenly didn’t seem so far oft
Seeing that residents’ daily contributions increased with the base prosperity level made Hayley teel more secure.
Grow, grow, grow!
Of course, Hayley knew her base was still a fragile seedling, unable to withstand even a little storm. She had to carefully protect it, hiding it and letting it grow quietly until it became strong.
After inspecting the base that day, with the base prosperity level upgraded, Hayley gave each resident a pound of meat as a welfare bonus to boost morale.

Amid the cheers and gratitude of the residents, she returned to her strelter.
“Ms. Reid is the best!”
“Joining Haylight Base is the luckiest thing that has ever happened to us!”
