Chapter Chapter 14,8
Hayley returned to her shelter feeling satisfied.
Just after she got back, a voice came from the second floor.
“Dear Ms. Reid! You’re back!”
“What is it, Hayz?”
“You have a new message. Do you want to read it?”
“What? Someone left me a message? How did they do that?”
Hayley walked to Hayz’s main console. A virtual screen flickered, and a mini holographic Hayley appeared.
“It came through an interrupted radio transmission. Origin: Base K1.”
Hayley immediately thought of Liam.
Last time, he had asked her about radio frequencies. He really did reach out.
“Ms, Reid, I have automatically replied to you. Shall I read it?”
“Read it.”
Hayz snapped its virtual fingers, and a voice recording played through the speakers. Then, Hayley heard a conversation between a human and an AI persona.
“Is this Hayley? If so, respond on this frequency. I’m Liam. I need to talk to you.”
“Hi, there! You’ve reached the channel belonging to Hayley Reid, the greatest, most beautiful, and most awesome person in the universe. What’s up?”
Hayley blinked when she heard that.
“You are…Hayley?” Liam asked.
“Nope, I’m Hayz, spelled H-A-Y-Z!”
“Who’s Hayz?” 1
“I’m Ms. Reid’s assistant. Just tell me what you need. No need to be shy.”
“Okay… Hayz, tell your boss that Base K1’s monitoring team predicts a massive cold snap by the end of the month. I don’t know if you have enough supplies. If you’re short, I’d like to invite your boss to join a mission to seize the grain reserve in the Eastern region. Let me know if she’s interested.”
“Got it. I’ll pass that along, dear Mr. Liam!”
“Uh, okay. Goodbye, Hayz.”
“Please say, ‘Goodbye, dear Hayz’!”
There was a long pause. “Goodbye.”
“If you don’t say it, I might not forward your messages next time!”
There was a long, slow reply at the end; a soft, hesitant whisper. “Goodbye, dear Hayz.”
Hayley stared at the screen.
“Dear Ms. Reid, that’s the message. Are you satisfied with my handling?”
Chapter 29
“Uh, sure. Thank you, dear Hayz.”
“You’re welcome, dear Ms. Reid. The hologram spun around on the screen and flashed heart emojis. “It’s my honor to serve you. Would you like me to reply?”
“Yeah. Ask him what supplies they have, how the resources will be distributed, and how dangerous the operation is.”
“Okay. Please wait.”
Hayz sent a transmission back to Base Ki’s radio.
A short while later, Liam’s voice came through.

“The Eastern grain reserve has over ten thousand tons of stored grain, including rice, corn, and wheat, plus a large oil storage facility. The danger level is low, and there are very few staff inside. The area outside is vast and sparsely populated. The only thing is, this operation isn’t just between you and me. It’s a joint mission between Hope Base and Base K1. They’re allowing a few smaller bases to join, and I want to take you along.”
Hayley understood immediately.
Liam was offering her a straight-up favor.
There was a big score to grab, and he had pulled her in so he could return the favor.
