The Endgame Chronicles (by Hugh White) novel Chapter 279

Chapter 279

“Okay.”

Ned immediately led Hayley downstairs.

This time, everyone was much calmer when they saw the zombies below. The girls were terrified when they saw Digby’s corpse, but no one screamed anymore./

They kept their presence as low as possible and stayed close behind Hayley. Through the glass doors and windows, they could see a mass of zombies outside, their mouths stretched wide and their faces twisted and horrifying.

Their hearts were pounding hard.

They had been living on the second floor this whole time and had tried to observe the zombies before, but the things were way too scary. They never dared to actually study them, especially the girls.

With steady food and water, none of them had ever forced themselves to really face a zombie up close.

Now that they were finally standing right in front of the zombies, so close it felt like they could reach out and bite at any second, the girls with boyfriends clutched onto them tightly.

Cecilia and Ned’s relationship suddenly looked like it had been repaired.

The only one without a boyfriend was Lizzie. She stiffly gripped a crutch and walked at the very back. After passing Digby’s body, she hurried forward a few steps, then couldn’t help stopping again to look at him.

Before long, Hayley reached the last row of medicine shelves.

She had already cleared out everything in that area, but she hadn’t noticed the narrow door hidden behind the shelving before.

From the outside, it looked like just another wall.

In reality, when Ned unlocked it, there was a steep, narrow stairway going down.

“This is the underground storage. A lot of meds are down there,” Ned said.

“Go first. Lead the way.” Hayley signaled with a glance.

Even though these people looked more clueless than dangerous, she didn’t trust any of them.

Having them lead the way in front was non-negotiable.

Ned nodded. He didn’t argue, because there really was nothing dangerous down there.

When they had first taken over this place, they had already checked the basement. They had hauled out all the food long ago. All that was left were crates and crates of medicine.

Hayley carried Griffin down the long corridor. There were no lights, so she pulled out a flashlight. Soon, tall rows of shelves

came into view.

Every shelf was stacked with boxes of drugs.

Just reading the naines, she could tell that a lot of it was exactly what she needed.

This was perfect.

“Do you need us to help move some of this out?” Ned asked.

By now, he had figured it out. Threatening Hayley was useless. If he wanted anything in return, he had to prove he was useful.

“No need,” Hayley replied casually. “I’ve got an inventory-variant Gifted right here. Don’t you know?”
