The Endgame Chronicles (by Hugh White) novel Chapter 280

Chapter 280

Watching Hayley empty out a storage room of more than 600 square feet, the rest of them finally snapped back to reality.

They stared at the man Hayley was supposedly “carrying” but was really hauling around like luggage. Griffin’s hands and feet were tied together, hog-tie style, and he was slung diagonally over her shoulder like an oversized backpack.

His head rested against her shoulder. Every now and then, she clipped more stuff onto his neck, like he was just a human coat

rack.

When he had first shown up here, he had only been carrying one bulging backpack.

So all that stuff that kept appearing out of nowhere… It was because he was an inventory-variant Gifted.

“Why don’t we have that?” one of the girls blurted out.

Hayley turned toward the narrow stairway. “How old are you guys?”

“We just graduated from high school last year. We were about to start college!”

So they really were a bunch of sheltered kids.

Right then, the sound of shattering glass came from the top of the stairwell, followed by a girl screaming.

As soon as the scream rang out, the students standing on the steps came tumbling down in a panic.

“Help!”

“Zombies!”

“They’re coming!”

Hayley, with Griffin still on her back, swept her flashlight toward the stairwell and sprinted over.

The moment she reached the doorway, a thin, elderly zombie staggered into view.

It clung to the doorframe, its hair hanging in filthy strands as it stared inside. Its bony fingers dug into the frame, and behind it came a flood of more zombies.

Hayley lunged forward and slammed the metal door shut.

Screeeeech!

The sound of fingernails scraping against aluminum made their skin crawl. Dozens of hands clawestate dooitrame, leaving long, ugly scratches in the metal.

Clack, clack!

A zombie’s head got stuck low in the doorway, dark teeth chewing on the edge as it gnawed its way upward

In the narrow, single person stau well, Hayley braced the door with one hand and wrestled against the weight of the entire

swarm on the other side

With her free hand she yanked her blade free and slashed downward, chopping off every hand that reached through the crack

As for the zombie head gnawing the frame, she brought the blade straight down and sliced off halt its tace, then rammed the door outward again and again.

Thud! Thud! Thud!

After just a few hits, the head was smashed into mush

Then she twisted around and shoved Griffin into the gap like a human cushion, slamming back with her full body weight.

Griffin coughed. “Captain Gorgeous, I’m still breathing over here.”

“I know,” Hayley replied.

With a click, she shoved the bolt into place and locked the door.

Once it was sealed, the teenagers stared at her, still shaking from shock.

“Are we…trapped down here now?”

Hayley rolled her eyes. “You might be ready to die here. I’m not.”
