The Endgame Chronicles (by Hugh White) novel Chapter 296

Chapter 296

Alex was determined to get look inside Hayley’s base. He wanted to see just how strong she really was.

Unfortunately for him, Hayley never gave him the chance.

All he could see was the weakest small base within the Haylight League.

He had originally assumed that even if Ember Base could afford to eat, life there probably wasn’t great.

Instead, the moment he stepped inside, he saw healthy elderly residents everywhere, hanging bacon out to dry and cooking dried meal packs at home.

Alex fell into deep thought.

How could this base be living this well?

After thinking it over, he came to a conclusion.

Hayley must be pouring resources into the league like crazy. She had to be using massive amounts of supplies to stabilize the Haylight League.

That meant she really did have some strength. Her own base probably wasn’t much worse than this.

What he couldn’t imagine was that it wasn’t just “not much worse”. It was on a completely different level.

Here, they ate dried meal packs and bacon. At Hayley’s base, they ate fresh vegetables and fresh meat!

This wasn’t about putting in a lot of effort. She was exporting surplus that her own base didn’t even need. She wasn’t sacrificing anything!

Alex was secretly recalculating Hayley’s true strength in his head

The car stopped.

With a cold expression, he got out, planning to find Ember Base’s leader, Malcolm, first. But the moment he stepped down, a group of people appeared in front of him.

“You’re Mr. Kirk from Hope Base, right?”

Alex lifted his gaze coolly and saw a group of well-dressed people standing there.

“I’m Russell Cook from Ironlock Base. My father is Michael Cook. You should’ve met him before. He approved quite a few of your projects back then,” Russell said confidently.

Alex looked at him coldly and simply replied, “I forgot.”

Russell froze.

In terms of family background, Russell didn’t even come close to Alex

If Russell counted as coming from a big family, then Alex practically came from royalty.

Alex’s father was the head of Dawn Holdings, and his mother was a high ranking politician

Even before the apocalypse, the Cooks had begged Dawn Holdings to invest. It was never the other way around.

Alex didn’t take Russell seriously at all. He scanned the area. “Where’s Malcolm from Ember Base?”

Russell answered quickly, “He took some people inside.”

Alex immediately strode toward the interior.

Kussell hurried after him and called out, “Mr. Kirk, maybe we should wait for Base K1 and Firebrand Base to arrive, then go in together.”

Alex skipped right over those two bases and asked instead, “Have people from Haylight Base arrived?”

Russell thought fast. “I heard they have. Seems like they’re walking around inside. We could take a look, too. Might run into them.”

Hearing that, Alex finally changed his mind. He glanced around the village and followed along to take a look.

After they left, an armored vehicle slowly drove into Eagleton.

Scarlett, who had received the message, stepped outside and immediately saw Hayley’s vehicle arriving.

“Ms. Reid! You’re finally here!”

Hayley parked in the open area of the village and dragged a man out of the passenger seat. “Hey.”

“Didn’t Leonard and Thomas come?” Scarlett looked behind her.

“I gave them two days off. Told them to rest at home.”

“As long as you came, that’s enough.” Scarlett ignored the man Hayley had been carrying around lately. In her eyes, there was only ever Hayley.

“A lot of bases showed up today. They’re all inside. Should we go in?”
