Chapter 297
Up to now, Hayley had only seen Base K1. Ember Base was also a small base, but it was far more organized than Base K1. After all, Ember Base was essentially a well-planned rural village.
“How many people were in your village originally?”
“We had a little over 400 households,” Scarlett said. “But most of the younger people were working elsewhere, so the total population was under 1,000. That actually worked in our favor. Each household was small, and everyone stayed home, so our survival rate was pretty high.”
Nearly half of the elderly turned into zombies when the virus broke out, then infected others.
Luckily, rural homes were spread out, each with its own yard, and doors kept shut. Even after turning, the zombies stayed inside their own houses.
That made it relatively easier for Scarlett and the other young people to clear out the village. It also saved a large number of elderly residents.
Right now, the village had a total of 210 people, with only a little over 40 young adults.
Half of the young people followed Hayley to fight zombies. The other half stayed behind to guard the base and care for the village.
Compared to most places, their base had been lucky.
Hayley walked through the village, taking in the layout. When they reached the newest and most impressive three-story self- built house, Scarlett tugged Hayley’s arm. “That’s my home.”
“Not bad. Your place is the nicest house in the whole village.”
“My parents built it right before the apocalypse,” Scarlett said, her voice suddenly tinged with sadness.
Hayley didn’t know how to comfort her, but Scarlett quickly brushed it off herself. “Come on. I remember you love cashews. I’ve got some inside!”
Hayley laughed and followed her inside.
Scarlett brought out a tin of mixed nuts. “It’s hot inside. Let’s sit by the door and catch some breeze.”
“Sounds good.”
Hayley grabbed two small stools, one for herself and one for Griffin. After sitting down, she turned to hith. “Don’t just sit there. Do something”
With that one sentence, Griffin immediately pulled out a palm fan and started tanning her.
“How’s this?”
“Stronger.”
As a ruthless capitalist who never wasted labor and was stingy to the core, there was no way Hayley would let him rest.
