Hayley gave Jim a brief nod. After Jim werit upstairs, Victor kept talking.

“It’s the damn apocalypse now. The living can barely survive themselves. Who’s still got time to care about the dead now?”

As soon as he finished, Daniel sneered, “You’re right. So you’d better live a long time. If you die, Todd will be worse off than Bridget.”

“Watch it!” Victor snapped in anger.

“Vic, just forget it.”

“I’m not in the mood for this. Bye,” Daniel said as he stood up. He shot Mona a meaningful look and headed upstairs.

Only after Daniel disappeared up the stairs did Victor finally relax. He stared at where Daniel had gone, then sighed. “Todd, if I’m not around someday, you have to be strong. Don’t become a burden to anyone. You have to take good care of yourself.”

Todd was a neat-looking teenage boy. He shook his head hard, tears pooling in his eyes. “Vic, you won’t die.”

“Stop crying! This isn’t the time for tears. Who taught you that?” Victor barked.

Just then, the lights above them flickered once and went completely out.

This place ran on an independent power system. Solar energy charged it during the day, enough to last through the night.

And now, everything went dark.

“Aaaah!”

A shrill scream came from upstairs.

Hayley and the others immediately looked up. In less than a minute, everyone had rushed to the stairway on the second floor.

When they reached the top, they saw a door wide open in the corner room ahead. In the dim darkness, a humanoid creature with twisted, backward-bending limbs was straddling someone.

It clutched the man’s head tightly and tore into his face with savage bites. One bite ripped his lips apart, exposing two full rows of teeth and gums.

Daniel screamed in agony, mouth wide open, completely forgetting to use his abilities. The moment his mouth opened, the zombie clamped down hard on his tongue,
