The Endgame Chronicles (by Hugh White) novel Chapter 328

Cha

All of these bases were located around Brookville and Crestford.

Millions of zombies trapped inside the cities were finally pouring out, launching direct attacks on bases that still had living people.

At Ironlock Base

Ever since Russell’s base got humiliated at the last league meeting, where Hayley crushed him and stripped away most of his guard force, Ironlock Base was about to face its first real zombie horde since the apocalypse began.

After barely making it back alive with Sabrina and Mandy, Russell spent two full days cursing Hayley. At the same time, he kept telling himself it was fine to lose the guards.

After all, his base was already running low on food. Even if Hayley hadn’t taken his people, he wouldn’t have been able to support that many guards much longer. If they got desperate enough, they might’ve turned on him anyway.

Once back home, Russell inventoried his supplies. Seeing that there was barely enough food to last his family another month or two, he ordered the servants to speed up planting and send people out to scavenge.

He made up his mind to never go back to Hayley’s or Alex’s bases, thinking those arrogant fools would pay sooner or later.

He figured Hayley’s people would get wiped out the next time they tried to reclaim a city, bitten to death by zombies. His base might just survive to the very end.

Once they were all dead, he would come out and form a brand new league himself.

Russell sneered inwardly, thinking that Hayley’s group was a bunch of idiots who weren’t content with a perfectly safe life.

They just had to go reclaim cities full of zombies. That kind of thing would only get them killed faster! Plus, the guards who abandoned him were probably all dead by now.

Russell spent his days at home cursing the Haylight League, wishing them disaster and death. He was waiting to hear about

their base being overrun by zombies.

Then, the news came.

Mr. Cook, a massive zombie horde is coming from the city! They’re roaming everywhere. A large cluster is already approaching

Ironlock Base!

Russell froze. He snatched the binoculars from a subordinate.

Where? Where are they?

They’ve reached the east gate of the residential compound!

Russell looked through the binoculars, and his face instantly turned white.

In his view, a dense sea of zombies staggered forward. Their heads were tilted at unnatural angles, their bodies twisting as they marched in a vast tide toward the villas.

At a glance, there were over a hundred of them.

The only guard who had followed him back asked in panic, Mr Cook, what do we do now?

After a moment of shock, Russell heard the question and quickly said, Take some people and hold them oft first I’ll pak my things. You have to buy me time so I can escape!

The guard froze. Are you abandoning me? I’m the only guard who came back with you!

You’re so loyal. Of course, I would never abandon you

Russell forced out a smile.
