The Endgame Chronicles (by Hugh White) novel Chapter 363

Chapter 363

The zombie was even trying to stuff the delicious intestines back into its own body.

Clang!

Another blade slammed straight into the back of its skull.

The moment the saber was pulled free, a gleaming crystal core popped out. Only then did the poor zombie finally lose the ability to keep chewing its “meal”.

“Gosh, I wished it rained so it wouldn’t stink so badly!” Hayley muttered.

She caught the crystal core and kept moving at a run.

The entire exchange took less than two seconds.

Hayley didn’t pause for even a second. Once you’ve killed enough, it becomes instinct.

Under normal circumstances, Hayley used blades whenever possible and saved her gifts for last. Gifts were her trump cards. She fought with pure physical strength first, then used her gifts only when necessary. That was how she conserved stamina and stayed effective longer.

This was also the widely accepted approach among the Gifted in the apocalypse. Gifts were an extra lifeline, not something to rely on exclusively. Anyone who depended only on gifts and neglected physical combat ability was basically useless.

After Hayley killed the first zombie, about eight more poured in from the amusement park. Each one screeched and lunged forward with claws outstretched.

Hayley locked onto the first zombie only, as the rest weren’t her concern.

The people behind her fanned out in a line. Long blades and triangular daggers swung in unison. Their coordination was flawless as they surged forward.

After efficiently clearing that small wave, Hayley spotted a building ahead, completely crawling with

zombies.

The two-story service center was black with bodies, zombies plastered across every surface.

The glass roof looked shattered. Zombies climbed up and then dropped down in spirals, like someone had flushed a toilet.

Hayley slowed to a stop at the sight of the writhing mass.

Was this even still salvageable?

Below was a fully sealed basement. Liam had to be inside already. Only after every zombie above was cleared could they rescue the people trapped underground.

And it had to be fast. They had to beat the zombies before the basement door was breached.

Which meant only one option: large-scale heavy weapons. They had to flatten everything above and forcefully pull the survivors out

At that moment, Alex’s voice came through her earpiece.

“Captain Reid, when rescuing Milky Way Base, avoid heavy weapons if at all possible. Brookville is extremely unstable. Any misstep could trigger a citywide zombie surge.”

Hayley’s brow tightened. She glanced toward the northwest, where they had already detonated a massive batch of landmines to draw zombies away.

Right now, she felt like she was walking a tightrope. They had gotten lucky earlier, pulling the amusement park zombies without setting off the city.

But that luck wouldn’t hold twice.

She absolutely couldn’t use heavy weapons again.

You only get to dance on a blade’s edge once.

“Boss, I’m begging you. You have to save Captain Caldwell!” Leonard said urgently, the usual calm gone

from his face.

Liam had been his former superior. Derek and the others in Liam’s team were like brothers to him.
