The Endgame Chronicles (by Hugh White) novel Chapter 365

Chapter 365

They had to move now!

Everyone followed Hayley down the stairs.

The elevator had stopped running long ago. A thick layer of dust coated the panels. One step left a clear footprint.

That was actually a good thing. It made it easy for Hayley to tell if there were any zombie traces

The flashlight on her helmet swept downward as she descended, scanning the dust below. Only when they reached the bottom did she spot scattered footprints on the underground floor.

“Raarh!”

A zombie lunged out from a pitch-black corner.

It was around 6 p.m. There was still a bit of light outside, but not a single trace of it inside the subway

station.

The only light came from the headlamps of Hayley’s ten-person squad.

Beams of light cut through the dead silence and darkness of the station, and suddenly, a male zombie in a subway uniform burst out in front of them.

Its dead face had almost no flesh left, just tight, darkened skin clinging to bone. Its mouth stretched into a wide O, like the famous painting, The Scream, and it leapt at them like a ghost.

Slash!

Another clean strike.

The others couldn’t see the zombie in the dark, but Hayley could.

From the moment she entered the station, her mental energy had been fully deployed.

With her current range reaching nearly 165 feet, she had already sensed the zombies lurking below long before the footprints appeared.

After cutting down the first zombie, rapid footsteps echoed through the dark station.

Zombies poured out from all directions.

All of them rushed straight toward Hayley.

Flash!

A flashbang was tossed out.

Hayley lit up the area for the team. With enough visibility, everyone finally saw the zombies charging at

them.

There were men and women, old and young. Some were still dragging suitcases they had never let go of

even in death.

They looked like people who had lived nearby. When the virus broke out, they tried to leave, carrying luggage they had prepared in advance.

At moments like this, Hayley couldn’t help but think how cruelly perfect the timing of the outbreak had

been.

It was around 6 a.m., when the subway had just started running.

Hardly anyone had been on the trains.

Hayley led the team, cutting down the zombies one by one. After collecting the crystal cores, they pushed forward toward the platform entrance.

More zombies were drawn in from above and followed them down. Fortunately, most of these showed very low levels of evolution.

Hayley’s group jumped over the turnstiles and moved inside, while the zombies were blocked by the metal barriers.

When they reached the platform, a subway train with its doors tightly shut appeared in front of them.
