The Endgame Chronicles (by Hugh White) novel Chapter 369

Chapter 369

Holding out for another minute or two wasn’t going to change their fate.

And then, they saw it.

The metal spikes anchoring the wall were starting to loosen. Their massive wire net was on the verge of

collapse.

With a sharp snap, the first steel spike flew loose, and an entire cable tore apart. One line after another was forced open by the ferocious zombie tide.

Their final line of defense was gone.

“Fall back!” Liam shouted, leading everyone as they retreated into the tunnel they had dug.

Once they were all packed into the narrow, shoulder-wide tunnel, every gun was aimed outward as zombies poured in.

Heavy firepower blocked them again, if only briefly.

The machine guns ran dry. The barrels were so hot that they felt like boiling kettles. People tossed the weapons aside and switched to their gifts.

Abilities erupted everywhere.

The moment everyone went all out, Derek knew it: they no longer had any cards left to play.

Second by second, exhaustion set in as their abilities were completely drained.

And then, the mutant horde arrived.

Boom!

A mound of zombie bodies was blown apart as about 18 giant mutant zombies forced their way through the pile and charged forward.

“Raarh!”

The instant Derek saw the mutants rushing in, he threw himself forward without hesitation.

He put himself directly in their path.

Even at the very end, Derek and the others never blamed Liam. If he hadn’t insisted on saving these people, they could’ve broken out on their own.

Hayley had told them before that they didn’t need to care about the lives of survivors from other bases. Their own lives always came first.

But they still remembered who they once were.

Soldiers.

Even if the times had changed, even if the country was gone, they couldn’t bring themselves to abandon

these people.

So they decided to be the final wall.

If they had to die, they would die shielding the people.

Just as Derek was about to close his eyes, an invisible barrier suddenly appeared between him and the

zombie right in front of him.

“Raarh, raarh, raarh!”

“Raaaaarh!”

The screams were right in his ears, but the zombie couldn’t move forward even an inch.

Derek froze in shock.

At the same time, he felt an incredibly cool breeze coming from the tunnel behind him.

Wind?

You only get wind when there’s airflow.

“Did we just…”

Derek spun around.

Behind him, the people who had been crammed into the tunnel were now running full speed toward the exit. Moving against that flow was a familiar figure, pushing forward instead.

“Boss!”

Derek recognized Hayley instantly.

The moment he saw her, something surged up and burned behind his eyes.

Hayley was here.

Hayley was here!

Hayley had come to save them!

She had broken through the remaining half of the tunnel to get to them.

As she advanced, Hayley fully released Jim’s ability, the air barrier. At a moment like this, it couldn’t have been more perfect.

As she reached Liam, Derek, and the others, the remaining people in the tunnel finished evacuating one by one.

“What are you waiting for? Move!” Hayley snapped.

She glanced at the familiar faces, especially their stunned, disbelieving expressions, and smiled

Calm as ever, she looked at the dense wall of zombies ahead

“Go. I’ll hold them.”

The sound of her voice snapped Liam and the others back to life. They stood up, eyes blazing with renewed energy, as if they were looking at a deity.

Hayley was here!
