Chapter 380
Hayley heard the noise from the second floor. She looked out through the mall windows and saw severa ropes being lowered. Moments later, about seven people were hauled up.
She leaned closer and looked down.
Outside the mall, the streets were packed solid with zombies. They stretched their arms upward, snarling nonstop as they jumped and clawed at the people trying to escape.
Each of those people carried oversized backpacks. They kicked off the wall and climbed desperately as the people above pulled them up.
Just then, a zombie in a tracksuit let out a sharp snarl and leaped high out of the horde. It grabbed the wall, then lunged straight at the person on the far-left rope.
It clamped its teeth into the back of the man’s head. The force of the impact tore his scalp open instantly. Blood sprayed everywhere, drenching his head and body.
“Aaaah!” the man screamed in agony.
“Elmer!” someone on the third floor shouted in panic.
At that moment, a fire orb shot toward the zombie behind Elmer Wagner. The zombie, unable to hold on, was blasted away.
Right after that, the man on the rope to Elmer’s right kicked off the wall and rushed over to him.
Sensing rescue, Elmer screamed at the top of his lungs, “Danny! Save me! I’m your best friend. I helped you score Monica. I even killed your love rival for you! I cleaned up your brother’s messes for you more than once. You’ll save me, right?”
As he finished speaking, a flash of silver appeared in Danny Porter’s hand. A small, sharp knife sliced clean through the shoulder strap of Elmer’s backpack. Danny yanked all the supplies off him.
Before Elmer could even react, Danny’s blade slid across the rope Elmer was gripping.
In an instant, the rope snapped loose.
Elmer fell straight down into the zombie horde below.
“Danny! You heartless monster!”
With his scalp torn open and blood covering his face, Elmer was like a slab of fresh meat thrown into the crowd. The zombies below went berserk. Even the zombies that had been trying to jump and grab the climbers turned and lunged at him instead.
In less than two seconds, Elmer was completely swallowed by the zombie horde.
Meanwhile, Danny and the others climbed back up to the third floor safely.
Hayley watched the entire life-and-death scene play out. Her gaze stayed calm, but she paid extra attention to the man who stole supplies and killed his teammate without hesitation to buy time for the
others
He was ruthless.
Honestly, if Leonard had been the one in Elmer’s place, she might not have been able to act that decisively.
Her ruthlessness was reserved for outsiders. Toward her own people, she wasn’t that cold
If Leonard were bitten, she would only end his life once he had fully turned into a zombie. As long as there was even a trace of human awareness left, she wouldn’t allow anyone to hurt him.
That man was even more ruthless than she was.
“Hayley, we’ve made contact with Alex, Liam said as he walked over.
“What did he say?”
“Milo’s leading eight base squads to reinforce us.
“Where are they now?”
“They’ve reached the former Milky Way Base, but it’s already surrounded by a zombie tide. The entrance into the city is blocked by hundreds of thousands of zombies. Alex said he’s figuring out another way to support us and will get back to us by tonight at the latest.”
