The Endgame Chronicles (by Hugh White) novel Chapter 381

Chapter 381

You’d better talk! If you don’t, every single one of you trash is going to be buried with my brother! I’ll tear you all apart. Tell me now! Who was it?!

Danny shook off Monica’s hand and glared at everyone in front of him, rage boiling over.

Just then, a clear female voice cut through the chaos.

I killed him.

Hayley stepped forward calmly.

She never avoided trouble. If she did it, she owned it.

The moment Danny saw her, a fire orb flared above his head. He locked onto Hayley, fury blazing, ready to burn her alive.

Before he could act, a splash of water doused the flames instantly.

Danny!

A water orb surged from Monica’s palm as she strode in front of him.

Stop making trouble. Simon ignored Evergreen Base rules. He never reported anything to me and blocked the first floor on his own, refusing to let them in. That’s why he was killed. If he had just told me, this wouldn’t have happened. And if you keep stirring things up, then leave Evergreen Base. We’re a small base. We can’t afford to host someone like you.

Danny stared at Monica, eyes burning.

So you’re protecting them.

Monica pressed her lips together, her clear eyes flashing again and again.

She wasn’t protecting them. She was protecting her base.

Hayley’s group had more than 150 people. Evergreen Base barely had over 100. Hayley’s people were well equipped, loaded with guns, while Evergreen Base had only three guns total.

Monica didn’t even know how many Gifteds that Hayley had or what other cards she was holding. If a fight broke out, Evergreen Base had no chance at all.

Besides, Simon had always been a disaster within their base. Why should she risk everything for someone like him?

“Go back. That’s an order! If you don’t, you’re no longer part of Evergreen Base!

Monica had made her final decision. If she couldn’t stop Danny, she would cut ties.

She would never make an enemy out of someone as dangerous as Hayley for Danny’s sake. She had to protect her

base.

Hearing the finality in Monica’s words, Danny understood.

He stared at her for a long time. After half a minute, he ground out through clenched teeth, You’re only doing this because of my feelings for you.

Then he turned and walked away.

Danny left, but Monica stood there for a long time.

Everyone else slowly dispersed. When the area finally cleared out, Monica took a step as if to leave. For some reason, when she moved, her straight, proud shoulders seemed to lose their strength and slump just a little.

At that moment, Hayley’s voice came from behind her.

Come sit with us for a bit.

Monica turned around and looked at the young woman behind her, whose hair was tied in a high ponytail and was dressed in clean, practical combat gear.

Hayley was much younger than her, yet Monica sensed something familiar.

The same loneliness. The same pride. The same toughness.

People naturally feel drawn to those who resemble them.
