Chapter 382
Hayley smiled.
She liked smart people.
The moment they met, both sides had already sized each other up.
Monica was assessing them, and of course, Hayley was doing the same.
Monica’s base had fewer people than Hayley’s. They barely had any weapons, and their Gifted were obvious under Hayley’s perception abilities. On top of that, only 13 people had just returned.
With a base this small, if Hayley wanted to make a move, they wouldn’t even have the chance to fight back.
The fact that Monica chose to step aside, keep her distance, and swallow the loss of Simon told Hayley everything she needed to know.
Monica was rational and intelligent. She knew exactly how much strength she had and what she could handle. When you don’t have absolute certainty, reckless moves only lead to disaster.
“I’ll compensate you with 100 pounds of rice and 10 cases of instant noodles,” Hayley said.
In the apocalypse, they played by different rules. Residents were considered the property of the base leader.
Hayley owed Monica an explanation.
Monica thought it over. “No need. As long as you leave tomorrow, that’s enough.”
Hayley smiled faintly. “And Danny will agree to that?”
Hearing that, Monica frowned without realizing it.
“What’s Danny to you? You can’t keep him in line?”
Monica pressed her lips together and shook her head. “It’s nothing.”
“How about this?” Hayley said. “You tell me a bit about yourself, and I’ll tell you a bit about me.

Monica met Hayley’s serious gaze. She let out a soft laugh, her red lips curving into a smile as her whole posture
relaxed.
“Alright. I told you already that I’m the chairwoman of Evergreen Mall.”
“You did.”
“Well, Danny’s family is Evergreen Mall’s largest partner,” Monica said slowly. “Our families go way back. Before the apocalypse, something major happened in my family. Both my parents passed away, and I had to step in and take over Evergreen Mall overnight. Danny helped me a lot back then.
“Evergreen Mall had just fully come under my control and was finally on track when the apocalypse hit. Luckily, I was often working late in my office. I survived by staying inside the mall.”
As she spoke, Monica tightened her grip on the peach juice bottle in her hand.
On the day the apocalypse broke out, Danny ignored the zombie outbreak outside and rushed to Evergreen Mall to find her. After that, the two of them were trapped inside together.
Under extreme conditions, she grew up fast and was lucky enough to awaken a crucial water–element gift.

Meanwhile, Danny awakened a fire–element gift.
Monica handled management and organization, actively taking in nearby survivors. Together with Danny, she built the base, fought zombies, and kept Evergreen Base alive until now.
They had plenty of conflicts along the way, but in the end, Danny always compromised and listened to her.
Even when it came to Simon.
Simon had caused trouble in the base more than once. To give Monica an answer while avoiding damage to his brotherhood, Danny always sent his lackey, Elmer, to deal with it.
Danny had always stood on her side. Monica knew very well that without his help, she would never have made it this far. Ability alone wouldn’t have been enough.
