The Endgame Chronicles (by Hugh White) novel Chapter 390

Chapter 390

The time was now 11:40 a.m.

Hayley had led the group about 1.1 miles so far.

The pace was perfect.

They had all been through one breakout run before, so everyone knew what they were doing. Up to now, not a single person had fallen behind.

Just as expected, the zombie density on the surrounding streets was at its lowest.

Along the way, Hayley had killed only a little over 200 zombies in total.

Things were going smoothly for them, but the situation behind them was much worse.

Monica’s group was running behind Hayley, technically in a safer zone with fewer zombies.

However, their physical condition was terrible. Longterm hunger meant that after ten minutes of running, problems started popping up everywhere.

Monica stayed at the very back, forcing herself to control the situation. She had the stronger residents support those who were falling behind.

The whole group barely managed to keep up with Hayley’s team.

The time was 11:48 a.m.

They had covered about 1.7 miles. There were roughly 0.8 miles left to the rendezvous point.

Hayley was running effortlessly, occasionally urging the people in front to keep moving. She even had time to glance back at the group behind her.

She was surprised to find that Monica’s people were actually still keeping up.

Even though the gap between the two groups was growing, Monica gritted her teeth and pushed everyone forward. Almost all of them were still hanging on.

Raarh!

At that moment, a zombie in a business suit burst out from the shrubs by the roadside.

Its hair was a tangled mess, its mouth so rotten that it looked like it was covered in sores, the flesh completely decayed and exposing raw gums. Several bugs burrowed in its gums, occasionally crawling out and dropping pale maggots.

Raarh, raarh! Raarh!

The suitwearing zombie stared excitedly at the huge crowd running toward it.

So many. So damn many!

It didn’t even know who to pounce on first.

At first, it chased Hayley’s group, but the distance between them grew. Monica’s group quickly became the closest target.

The zombie instantly switched direction and lunged straight at Monica’s people.

Raarh!

At the front of Monica’s group was Freddie. When he saw the zombie charging, he raised his machete and swung with all his strength.

He was strengthenhanced.

The blade struck the zombie’s neck. But to Freddie’s shock, the cut didn’t go through. The machete got stuck in its neck instead.

This was a hardened zombie!

The hardened zombie glanced at the blade embedded in its neck. Its cloudy eyes rolled as it snarled, swinging in hardened, bladelike fingernails at the machete. Deep scratches instantly appeared on the metal.

Freddie could barely hold on. As he stumbled back, he fell into the middle of his own group along with the zombie.

Argh!

Aaaah!

Eek!

Screams erupted everywhere.

Monica’s formation collapsed instantly.

Just as the group fell into chaos, a water orb flew in. Monica swung her arm and forcefully killed the suitwearing zombie.

She looked at Hayley’s group pulling farther and farther ahead. She knew that if they couldn’t keep up, they would only face more and more zombies.

Ms. Fletcher, I can’t run anymore!

You have to run even if you can’t! Don’t fall behind! Run!

Monica clenched her teeth and drove everyone forward. No matter how hard it was, they had to run.

Everyone had to get out.

Soon, the time hit 11:53 a.m.

They were less than half a mile from Fairytale Park Station.

At that moment, a woman in Monica’s group turned pale, her vision going black as she collapsed to the ground.

Mom!the child on her back cried out.

Other residents tried to pull the woman up, but no one had any strength left to spare.

You all keep running!

Monica rushed up from the back, gasping for breath as she helped the fallen woman to her feet.

Just then, a wave of rotten stench rushed toward them. A hunched elderly zombie suddenly lunged out from behind a trash bin.

Monica flung out her waterelement gift, but the water orb dispersed the moment it formed.
