Chapter 414
Scott’s eyes lit up. He looked surprised at first, then seemed to understand. He was about to keep asking when Hayley spoke first.
“Honestly, Captain Fuller, I felt an instant connection with you. I truly think you’re a good person, so I’ll be straight with you. Life in that lousy league of mine is worse than death. Milo and Liam are not good people. They’re fighting over power and pick on me at every turn. I’m not just a figurehead league leader. I’m also a ball they kick back and forth.”
Scott paused. “Really? You seem pretty capable to me.”
“Milo’s subordinates are all ridiculously strong. Liam comes from the military. He’s basically the uncrowned king of the Northern Division. What do I have? Other than a few supplies, I have nothing.
“Milo and Liam took all my resources, gave me an empty title, and made me work for them. Whenever something goes wrong, they push me out front to take the blame. Otherwise, who would willingly come to a place this dangerous?”
Scott fell silent.
The more he listened, the more it made sense to him.
He looked at Hayley, his gaze growing deeper. “So in the end, Haylight League is still run by Liam and Milo.”
“What else could it be? I’m just a woman with no real power. Why would they listen to anything I say?”
At this point, Scott said nothing.
Hayley munched on cashews and complained casually, “Being a woman in the apocalypse is really hard. Not only do you have to face terrifying zombies, but you also have to deal with men pushing you around. If only I were a man like you, Captain Fuller. Then no one would dare bully me.”
After she said that, Scott suddenly said, “Stay.”
“Huh?”
Scott’s eyes were gentle and clear. For a brief moment, there was genuine seriousness in them. “Stay with me. If you follow me, I’ll protect you. No one will bully you again.”
“Aaaah!”
Just then, a scream erupted from the crowd behind them.
Sawyer stumbled over in panic. “Boss! Bad news! A huge group of zombies slipped in!”
Hayley stood up and saw chaos break out in the crowd. Zombies had already rushed straight into the gathering area.
They lunged at people who were preparing to rest.
Everyone was clearly unprepared. Caught in a sudden zombie wave, they had none of the killing momentum they showed during the day.
One resident had already been tackled and was being bitten.
In the darkness, countless more zombies surged in.
Damn. Scott was taking a big loss with this move.
“Don’t be afraid. It’ll be fine.” Scott’s voice rang out in her ear.
He remained calm as he watched everything unfold. “Everyone, retreat!”
“Retreat?”

“We have to. We’ve been exposed. Zombies are extremely dangerous at night,” Scott said seriously. “Fall back now!”
At his command, the residents of Tomorrow Base began to retreat.
Only then did Hayley think of her own follower. “Where’s Griffin?”
“Retreat first. Our people will save him,” Scott said, grabbing her wrist and pulling her forward.
As he dragged her into a run, waves of hoarse roars rose behind them.
“Raarh!”
“Raarh!”
