Chapter 427
For the first time ever, Griffin ran into a full-blown trust crisis.
He looked at the little girl standing in front of him, her face stiff and serious. He lowered his head slightly, one eye sincere and stniling
“Hey, kiddo. I had a sister about your age, too. She was my whole world, but she didn’t make it through the apocalypse. You remind me so much of her. I promise, I’m not a bad guy. You’re smart, just like my sister. You can tell, right?”
The little girl stared straight into his eyes, then slowly said, “Liar.”
Griffin almost felt a heart attack coming.
“I’m telling my brother that you people are up to no good! And you’re trying to trick me!” The girl turned and ran deeper inside.
At that moment, a teenage boy’s voice, still rough from puberty, rang out.
“Wait!” Nash stepped forward. “We really aren’t bad people!”
The girl looked him in the eyes. “Really?”
“Really. We didn’t even know anyone was living here. We never meant to hurt you,” Nash said firmly.
The girl thought for a moment. “Okay, I’ll believe you. But I’m only believing you.”
Griffin and everyone else were stunned.
What was that supposed to mean? Was it just because they were close in age?
After earning her trust, Nash turned to look at Hayley, who nodded at him.
It was the first time Nash had ever gotten her approval. His confidence instantly shot through the roof. He looked back at the girl.
“My name’s Nash. She’s my boss. The others are my teammates.”
The girl glanced over the rest of them. “I’m Sharon. That guy earlier is my brother. He’s the one in charge here.”
“You’ve been living here the whole time?”
“Yeah.” Sharon Trivett nodded. “We found this cave when we were developing the mountain. After the zombie outbreak, we hid here and stayed.”
“How many of you are there?”
Sharon shook her head. “A lot died. There are 31 now. No, 32. One more is about to arrive.”
“What do you mean?”
“Matt’s wife is about to have a baby.”
Just then, a heart-wrenching scream echoed from deeper inside the cave.
The sound pierced through the tightly sealed metal door behind them, instantly exciting the zombies outside all over again.
They began slamming against the door, snarling once more.
The girl’s face tightened.
“You really did hurt us. We had almost cleared all the zombies outside. We were even planning to go down to the old apartment blocks to get medical supplies for Matt. Now, your damn helicopter noise dragged all the zombies down here. We can’t get out anymore!”
“Ah… Aaaahh!”
The woman’s screams continued.
Sharon stopped talking and ran deeper inside.
