The Endgame Chronicles (by Hugh White) novel Chapter 462

Chapter 462

After a long time, the screen in front of them finally connected.

The image was violently shaky. Only half of the person on screen was visible. The rest was the ceiling and flickering strip lights overhead. Harsh breathing and the sound of running poured out of the speaker.

“Dad? Dad!” Penelope called out the moment she saw half of her father’s face on screen.

“Penelope, don’t come back,” Lionel said, panting as he ran. “Level Three… There’s a breakout on Level Thre

Just then, it looked like he tripped over something.

The image spun wildly. The camera swung around, lighting up what was behind him.

A massive swarm of blood-covered zombies was tearing forward in pursuit.

They were all newly turned. The blood on their bodies was still bright and wet. Some of them ran while blood sprayed from torn necks. Others sprinted with ripped-open guts hanging loose, slick and elastic, slapping agai the floor as they moved.

The fresh organs were dragged across the ground, trampled by other zombies. The organs burst open, spilling! -digested messes and fully processed waste alike.

Red, yellow, white, black. Sticky, watery, thick. All of it smeared together into a single nightmare.

They looked nothing like the dried-out, rotten, maggot-infested zombies Hayley usually saw, the ones that had been decaying for years.

“Raarh!”

“Raarh!”

A fresh zombie lunged toward Lionel, who had fallen in front of the camera. Its face, nose half-chewed away and only one grayish eyeball left, filled the screen in a rush of gore.

At that moment, Lionel grabbed a man running beside him and shoved him forward to block the zombie.

With a gush, bright red blood splashed across the screen.

The man Lionel had dragged into the zombie’s path was slashed across the face. One swipe tore away half his face. leaving nothing but mangled flesh.

“Aaah

A screamh of pure agony burst out

“Radth, raarh, reart!”

“Haarl

The zombie bat down, devouring flesh as it latched onto his face, chewing violently Blood sprayed in thick

stres

The man thrashed wildly, but he couldn’t shake the zombie clinging to him, as if it were fused to his bones.

Seeing the opening. Hopel scooped up his communicator and fled. As he can, he shouted to Penelope, “Don’t come bark owe theart Wan all the rescue team gets there

“Dad, the rescue team is already here!” Penelope shouted back.

Lionel’s steps faltered at her words, and a zombie lunged at him from behind.

He slammed himself against the wall just in time. There was a heavy thud as the zombie smashed into the wall behind him. A long smear of blood slapped onto the clean white surface.

“Is the rescue team really there?” Lionel shouted.

“Yes! They said they’re from Base K1!”

As Lionel kept running, he saw a large door ahead beginning to close. He sprinted for it.
