The entire Level One was sealed.

Still shaking, Gideon and the others looked toward Hayley and her team.

They had successfully locked down Level One.

As the locks engaged, Hayley and Liam lowered their heads and spoke quietly into their communicators.

Nearby, Gideon’s group huddled together, voices low and full of disbelief.

“They’re not like the base people. They’re way more human than the managers.

“Yeah. If it were the base leadership just now, they never would’ve cared whether we lived or died.”

“We have to stick with them!”

As they talked, a girl tugged anxiously at Gideon’s sleeve.

“Gideon.”

“What’s wrong, Shana?”

“Um, I’ve got a problem.”

Shana Woolridge had entered the base at the same time as Gideon.

They were both tourists who had been visiting the plains. They weren’t close and barely spoke, just assigned to the same labor group.

But after Gideon had saved her with that chair leg earlier, he had become the person Shana trusted most.

“What do you mean? Did you get bitten?” Gideon asked.
