The Endgame Chronicles (by Hugh White) novel Chapter 473

Chapter 473

“Raarh!”

“Raarh!”

“Raarh!”

Clusters of zombies surged through the rooms, howling as they chased down Hayley’s group.

It wasn’t that no one thought about closing the door. There simply wasn’t time.

The zombies were less than two feet behind them, closing in quickly.

Gideon and the others, running at the back, felt their nerves go numb. The snarls sounded like they were right next to their ears.

Heavy breathing, wet growls, screeching cries…

The stench of blood filled the entire space.

They tried knocking over tables, hurling chairs behind them.

But it was like tossing pebbles into a flood. The obstacles vanished instantly into the zombie tide. They didn’t slo anything down.

All they could do was run. Their legs felt disconnected from their bodies, moving on instinct alone.

Faster. Faster!

As fast as they could possibly go!

“Raarh!”

They burst out of the room.

Ahead, Hayley and her group were already waiting, holding the door open and cutting down the few zombies at the entrance.

Gideon and the others squeezed out every last ounce of strength.

Run!

Zombies from every direction were being drawn toward them. Those pouring through the rooms came out like water from a burst pipe.

Stephen was the first to make it through.

Mason was second.

Then, Kevin Potter.

Fourth.

Fifth.

Sixth, seventh, eighth. Gideon and the two women made it in together.

The massive steel gate slammed down.

Crack!

The sound of bones being crushed filled the air.

Every zombie that crossed into the gate’s range was flattened into pulp.

Lydia collapsed to the floor with a thud.

A moment later, everyone except Hayley’s group dropped where they stood.

Their hearts were pounding violently. It felt as if their chests were going to burst open, blood roaring in their ears until their heads rang.

Every single one of them was soaked in sweat.

Gideon still had a death grip on Shana’s and Lydia’s hands beside him, his fingers stiff and white.

That had been a true race with death.

It was far more dangerous than Level One.

After all, there were no liabilities on Level One.

Everyone followed Hayley’s lead. They weren’t useful, but they didn’t drag anyone down.

Here, one liability nearly got all of them killed.

As Gideon replayed the scene in his mind, he knew one thing for certain. He needed to stay even closer to Hayley and her people.

Just then, someone walked over to him.

“Lydia, I’m sorry about just now,” Kevin said. He was the same guy who had let go of her hand. “I just reacted without thinking.”

Lydia turned her head away, her face cold.

Kevin continued, “You know how people act on instinct in situations like that…”

“Get lost!” Lydia shouted, eyes red.
