The moment Liam heard Hayley’s voice, lightning crackled in his hand and shot upward.

“Aah!”

A sharp scream pierced the air.

The lights overhead flickered. Hayley drew the long blade from her back, leapt high off the ground, and slashed hard toward the light fixture above.

Crash!

The ceiling shattered. A pipe directly overhead burst open, water spraying everywhere.

A humanoid figure about four feet tall dropped straight down. The instant it hit the ground, it tried to bolt, moving fast.

But Hayley was faster. She kicked it hard into the wall.

Shing!

Her blade stopped at its throat.

The creature immediately began to beg.

Only then did everyone get a clear look at it.

It was a dwarf-like figure. Its entire body was unnaturally pale. It had white hair, fair skin, and white eyes. It wore white pants with a serial number printed on them. There wasn’t a hint of color on it anywhere.

“What is that? Some kind of mutant zombie?”

“Doesn’t look like a zombie.”

“Doesn’t look human, either.”

“Just kill it,” Griffin said.

“Don’t!” Mason and Kevin blurted out at the same time. “That’s Professor Stone’s experiment!”

Hayley turned to look at them.

Mason pointed at the number on the creature’s pants. “See? That’s the experimental ID Professor Stone uses.”

Everyone shifted their gaze back to the small figure.

It seemed to be missing its tongue and couldn’t speak, but its eyes were unmistakably human. It stared at Hayley’s blade in pure terror, frozen in place.

Hayley thought for a moment. “We can squeeze some more money out of him for this. How much do you think is fair?”

Liam looked at her, genuinely at a loss for words.

They restrained the small figure and secured it.

The mystery of what had touched Shana was finally solved. She let out a long breath of relief. Gideon’s group did

the same.

Nearby, Kevin walked up to Lydia. “Lydia, you saw it, too. When I heard you scream, I ran over immediately. I still love you.”

Lydia shook his hand off. “Get away from me.”

“What do I have to do for you to forgive me? I really didn’t mean it back then. It was instinct. You can’t throw away years of what we had over that!”

They had been together for many years. When the zombie outbreak happened, they were traveling on the plains. That was when Kevin proposed.

Lydia said yes.

Later, they made their way to Ark One and survived the apocalypse with a few close calls.

For two years, they were oppressed together and assigned to the hardest labor, but their relationship never changed.

Lydia had always believed she was happy.
