The Endgame Chronicles (by Hugh White) novel Chapter 476

Chapter 476

After receiving the order, Hayley had everyone pack up and move down a level.

Hardly anyone was using this passage now. Every floor still had zombies, but the numbers were nowhere near what they had faced outside.

It was pretty obvious that once Constant and his crew realized the virus had broken out, they had immediately locked down all access points inside the base.

No one inside was allowed to flee downward.

When they opened the stairwell door ahead, the brightly lit white staircase revealed only a dozen or so pairs of grayish zombie eyes staring up at them.

Those blank, almost innocent-looking eyes lit up the moment they sensed living people. The dull emptiness vanished, replaced by raw excitement.

“Raarh!”

Zombies in all kinds of clothing surged forward. Short sleeves, long sleeves, even white lab coats.

They howled as they charged up the stairs, bursting with terrifying energy. Their footsteps slapped loudly, stride skipping three steps at a time.

each

They ran and crawled together, arms and legs flailing as they climbed. Some were so frantic that their shoes flew off mid-charge.

Go, go, go!

Dinner time!

“Raarh!”

Bloody zombie faces rushed closer and closer.

Fortunately, these were newly turned. There was no rotting flesh, no overwhelming stench.

Just far more savage looks.

Their mouths stretched open impossibly wide, corners tearing as muscles split, blood pouring out as they lunged

Derek led from the front, his heavy blade cracking skulls with ease as he fought them head on in the narrow stairwell

Suddenly, a zombie dropped down from the stairs above, hanging upside down as it lunged straight for him. Its sharp claws raked across Derek’s arm.

Gideon and the others behind him cried in alarm.

But what shocked them even more was that the claws didn’t tear his clothes at all.

Slash!

Ethan, right behind Derek, drove a tri edged spike straight through the zombie. He flung the corpse aside, and only then did everyone get a clear look at their gear

The fabric was smooth and intact.

Not a single scratch.

Gideon and the others were stunned all over again.

These people’s equipment was on another level!

It didn’t take long before the entire stairway to the next level was cleared.

The floors above and below were sealed by glass doors, trapping the remaining zombies behind them. One by one they pressed against the sliding glass, howling and pounding.

But no one opened the doors despite the noise they made.

All the zombies could do was watch helplessly as a group of fresh, living prey disappeared from view.

Soon, they got to the underground Level Three.

The moment they stepped into Level Three, everything felt different.

The cramped, grid-like residential layout above was gone, replaced by neat rows of orderly rooms.

Beyond the residential area, the level was clearly divided into work zones, entertainment zones, and commercial

zones.

Each section was separated by large glass partitions.

They were currently in the northern section, the work area. Office after office lined the corridor.

There were even vending machines along the hallway. Inside were drinks from the old world: Soda, sparkling water, bottled coffee, milk drinks. There were instant noodles and chocolate, too, rare luxuries in the apocalypse.
