Samuel, sitting off to the side, watched her laugh and couldn’t help giving her a thumbs–up. “Holly, when Liam came back and told me what you did yesterday, I was honestly thrilled. That old guy deserved it. I’ve hated him fo years.”
“Really?” Hayley perked up immediately. “I smell gossip!”
Samuel’s expression darkened as he waved his hand in disgust.
“You probably don’t know what kind of person that guy really is.
“He used to be a top research prodigy that the country poured money into. Then one day, a foreign country threw cash at him, and he switched citizenship without blinking. Later, he got caught doing massive human experimentation, broke their laws, and ran back here.
“At the time, the country was desperate for talent, so they protected him and gave him funding and labs. But he never changed his citizenship back. He had been living here all this time with a foreign passport.”
“Wow,” Hayley said. “That old guy really had nerve.
Samuel laughed as he looked at her. “You blowing up his lab was the real power move. That lab was his life. You did what I’ve wanted to do for a long time but never got the chance to.”
Hayley grinned. “You can tell me what else you want done. If I run into it, I’ll take care of it for you.”
Samuel laughed loudly, clearly delighted. He liked her more and more by the second.
At this point, he had decided that Hayley was his real granddaughter.
Liam could take second place.
“By the way,” Liam said, “do you remember the test subject you brought back?”
Hayley, still laughing, finally remembered that they had dragged that experimental subject back with them yesterday.
They had originally planned to squeeze Constant for some extra compensation. Unfortunately, she had pissed him off into coughing blood before she could ask, so they just brought the subject back instead.
“That was his only successful result,” Liam said.
“Only result?” Hayley repeated.
“Yeah. We destroyed his lab. That one was the only thing that made it out. What do you want to do with it?”

Hayley thought for a moment. “Keep it.”
There was no chance she would give it back.
For now, they could keep it at their base. It might be useful someday.
After finishing all the Ark One drama, along with the gossip from the other two bases, Hayley noticed something
else.
Ark One was showering her with praise.
Nathaniel and Samuel were chatting privately, and Nathaniel couldn’t stop complimenting her. He kept talking about how outstanding she was and how much he admired her.
