The Endgame Chronicles (by Hugh White) novel Chapter 528

Chapter 528

Hayley came out of the trash pit and immediately spotted Nathaniel waiting in the bright, spotless main hall.

A group of people surrounded him.

They were all lowlevel supervisors from Level One. Each of them stood there respectfully, speaking to him in careful, flattering tones.

Standing among them, Nathaniel dooked almost untouchable, like someone far above their world.

When he saw Hayley return, he waved the others away.

You done with the restroom?

Yeah,Hayley replied. The bathrooms down here are rough. Let’s use the ones on Level Two.

Nathaniel paused. Sure.

He led her upstairs to Level Two.

Hayley actually wanted to recruit people here as well, but the vibe was different.

Life on Level Two was noticeably better. People were cleaner, better fed, and more comfortable.

She walked around for a bit but didn’t spot anyone worth approaching, so she kept moving upward.

Level Three wasn’t worth touching, either. People there were already beneficiaries of the system. They weren’t rich, but comfortable enough to keep their heads down.

By the time she finished touring the base inside and out, Nathaniel spoke again.

We’re heading up. They’ve prepared dinner.

Sounds good.

Having seen everything she needed, Hayley followed him upstairs.

At the same time, down on Level One.

Piers Powers, the Level One manager who had scored a huge haul earlier, was sprawled back after stuffing himself.

Ribs, shrimp, roast chicken. They were stuff he barely tasted once a year. And today, he had eaten his fill.

Some of the meat had faint reddish stains on it.

Piers didn’t know what they were. He didn’t care, either. Food like this didn’t get thrown away; you ate it.

Full and satisfied, Piers burped loudly.

Just then, a message came down from above.

All managers, report to Level Five immediately.

Piers jumped to his feet. He sucked the grease off his fingers one by one, rinsed them quickly, then headed upstairs.

The moment he reached the stairwell, however, something felt wrong. A sharp pain suddenly twisted through his

stomach.

DamnWhat’s this? Ate too well after too long, maybe?

Ding!

The elevator doors opened at Level Five. Managers from every floor were arriving one after another.

Clutching his gut, Piers forced himself forward.

When he was almost in the conference room, he finally couldn’t take it anymore.

He grabbed the arm of a welldressed woman in heels walking ahead of him. She was the Level Two manager.

What are you doing?she snapped, jerking her arm away in disgust.

Piers’s face was twisted in pain. He reached out again, and his fingers scraped her wrist. Rachel, help me out. I need a sick day. My stomach’s killing me.

Get lost, you trash!Rachel Carlson kicked him away without hesitation.
