Chapter 529
In a restroom on Level Five, Ark Three.
“Gus, we’ve already cleaned this place a few times today. Why are we back again?” Davy Gilbert asked.
“You think you get to question orders from upstairs?” Gus Ramsey snapped. “Move it! Screw this up, and we’re both done.”
“Okay.”
Davy grabbed his toolbox and followed Gus inside.
The moment he stepped in, something felt off. There was a faint metallic smell in the air.
“Gus… Do you smell that?”
“It’s a bathroom. What do you expect it to smell like?” Gus said, turning on the mop sink.
Water roared through the pipes, echoing across the tiled room. They split up, each taking a row of stalls.
Davy pulled open one door after another, cleaning as he went.
“Hey, did you hear about what happened up in the base today?” Davy asked.
“Don’t talk about things you’re not allowed to talk about. Shut up and work,” Gus snapped.
Davy rolled his eyes. “Okay.”
He opened the next stall and froze. His face twisted in disgust.
What kind of animals were these upper–level managers? How did they make it this far in life and still not know how to flush?
And what the hell happened in here? Did someone lose a fight with the toilet?
It wasn’t that hard. Take one tiny step closer, or aim like you mean it. Nobody wants splashback on their own
shoes.
Wrecking the place like this did them zero favors.
Why? Just why?!
“These Level Five execs are disgusting,” Davy muttered angrily.
The words had barely left his mouth when the stall behind him, the one Gus was about to enter, creaked open.
A tall shadow fell across the floor. Before the man even stepped out, the silver manager badge on his chest caught the light.
Davy’s brain went blank.
Damn it. He was done for!
The manager must’ve heard him. He was toast. 1
Gus realized they were in trouble and quickly said, “Mr. Powers, we didn’t mean any disrespect. We were just…”
He never finished the sentence.

The gaunt Gus was slammed to the floor as the bulky Piers lunged forward. A guttural animal snarl burst from his
throat.
Gus raised his hand instinctively to stop Piers, but three of his fingers were bitten clean off.
Crunch!
“Argh!” Gus yanked his hand back, blood spraying everywhere.
Two fingers were gone entirely. The third was stripped to bone, white and glistening, the flesh torn away.
The pain hit a heartbeat later.
Gus screamed.
Then, the scream cut off.
Piers lunged again, tearing into his throat. Blood soaked the tiles in seconds. Gus’s body twitched, then went slack, reduced to nothing but reflexive spasms.
