Chapter 534
After Arnold gave the order, every elevator connecting Level One to the upper levels shut down.
No one was allowed up.
On Level Five, the base–wide surveillance screens displayed every corner of Level One.
It looked like hell.
Residents were being tackled by zombies everywhere. Some were running through corridors. Some were trapped inside rooms, surrounded. Most of them were crammed into the only area that led upward, the elevator lobby.
Behind them, zombies poured in nonstop.
People on the outer edges grabbed whatever they could to fight back.
Those trapped closer to the elevators screamed at the cameras, pounding on the closed doors, begging.
Second by second, it sank in.
The people upstairs were never going to let them through.
Someone broke from the crowd and sprinted toward the main exit.
They had to run! Get out!
Arnold’s eyes went colder.
“Don’t let them leave. Upgrade the main gate clearance to my level only.”
He sealed their last escape route.
Let them out? Let them live?
What a joke.
The zombies had to be contained on Level One. Once the situation was clear, they could wipe everything out in one
sweep.
Letting these people go would mean the infection spreading outside. How were they supposed to clean that up afterward?
That would plant a ticking time bomb of zombies out there.
No way they were letting them come up!
Arnold watched as the Level One residents reached the gate, only to realize it wouldn’t open.
They were trapped.
Moments later, the zombies caught up. Bodies went down one after another, torn apart in sprays of blood.
At that point, Arnold put on a show of sympathy.
“Everyone should head back,” he said softly. “When this is over, I’ll handle Level One.”
He led everyone out of the control room.
As Hayley turned to leave, her eyes lingered on the screen.

In the chaos, two familiar figures stood out.
“Dad, we can’t get out!”
“The execs must’ve locked the gates,” Ryan said, staring at the panicking crowd.
People were being dragged down and eaten alive. Blood splattered everywhere. Some were trampled underfoot as others ran blindly over them.
Ryan’s face went hollow.
“Max,” he said hoarsely, “I’ll take you to the trash pit. There are fewer zombies there. You have to survive.”
The trash pit.
Max’s mind raced.
At that moment, the crowd surged again.
Max grabbed a little girl who nearly fell and got swallowed up in the stampede.
