The Endgame Chronicles (by Hugh White) novel Chapter 537

Chapter 537

The moment Hayley finished speaking, the room went dead silent.

Right. The zombie virus inhibitor.

They had argued endlessly about whether it worked. Then, the incident at Ark Two happened. Trevor used it himself and died soon after. After that, there was no way to verify anything.

But now that Hayley said it out loud

What if the inhibitor itself didn’t work? What if Trevor still got the virus, and then everything spiraled from there?

Someone from Ark Two spoke up, his voice tightening despite himself. YYou can’t

But Arnold cut in.

Mr. Clayton died on Level Five,he said slowly. Yet the outbreak started on Level One. How do you explain that?

Hayley glanced at him lazily.

Samuel’s advice echoed in her mind: Divide them. Let them tear each other apart.

This was the perfect moment.

That’s easy to check, she said. Look for anyone who could move freely between Level One and Level Five and had direct contact with your director. Once you find that person, you’ll know whether I’m lying.

Arnold fell into thought.

That didn’t make sense. Anyone who could get close to Trevor lived on Level Four or Five. Those people never went down to Level One. Plus, there was no way anyone from Level One could reach the director directly.

Just as confusion settled in, a shrill alarm suddenly blared. The lights above them flipped to flashing red, cutting through the room in harsh pulses.

That meant zombie activity on Level Five.

Simultaneous outbreaks on both floors! How did that happ

Arnold’s face drained of color.

His earpiece exploded with overlapping shouts.

Mr. Shelton! Massive zombie activity on Level Two!

Mr. Shelton! Level Three is overrun!

Mr. Shelton! Level Four has fallen!

Mr. Shelton! Level Five has more zombies breaking in!

Where are they coming from on Level Five?Arnold snapped.

The reply came in fragments, breathless and panicked.

The trashThe trash pit! The Level One zombies are climbing up through the garbage chutes!

Arnold’s head rang.

The garbage system.

He had forgotten.

The waste shafts connected the entire building from top to bottom. If zombies could climb up from below, then contamination could just as easily spread downward from above. 1

His mind flashed to Trevor, vomiting blood after only a few bites of dinner.
