Chapter 538
“Raarh!”
The instant Arnold finished shouting, the flood of zombies burst through the doorway and swallowed the guards closest to it.
The horde surged inside, rushing straight toward Arnold.
Worse, he had sent most of his guards away earlier while investigating whether the other bases had slipped the zombie virus in. Now, there was no one left to cover him.
As his remaining guards were torn apart, Arnold fired wildly while backing up.
Bang, bang, bang!
Bang, bang!
The gunfire only drew more zombies in.
Arnold shoved the Level Four manager forward as a shield and bolted backward.
Meanwhile, the others had already retreated to the far end of the hall.
There were only a few people left in the room now. Seven from Ark Three, and five from Ark Two. As for Ark One, just Nathaniel and Hayley.
They shoved the long dining tables and cabinets together, forming a crude barricade.
Everyone except Nathaniel and Hayley unleashed their gifts to hold the zombies back.
“Why are there more zombies?” someone yelled. “What are we supposed to do now?”
“We hold out!” Arnold shouted as he scrambled into the group. “I’ve already called for backup!”
He slammed his palm down. His metal abilities flared, and dozens of knives and forks shot into the air, spinning and slicing into zombie skulls.
“What the hell are you doing?” one of the Ark Two people screamed. “You dragged us here to die?”
“You’ve got some nerve talking,” Arnold snapped. “This is your fault!”
He grabbed the Ark Two man and hurled him straight into the zombies climbing over the table.
“Go to hell!”
The man was caught off guard and nearly swallowed. In desperation, a thick vine shot from his hand and wrapped around Arnold’s torso.
The vine tightened.
The zombies grabbed him first, and the surge pulled Arnold in right along with him. With a deafening crash, the table snapped apart.
The two of them were pinned on opposite sides of the broken table, bound together by vines, as zombies piled on top of them and tore in.
“Boss!”

“Mr. Shelton!”
Shouts rang out from both sides.
This time, the Ark Three people reacted fast. One of them charged forward, shoved Arnold fully into the zombie mass, and dragged the broken table back together, propping it at an angle with chair legs to block another wave.
“All grudges end now!” the new manager, Woody Craig, shouted. “Use everything you’ve got, or we’re done!”
He fired off water orbs while metal blades whirled through the air, each strike punching cleanly into zombie heads.
The others followed suit, pouring everything into the fight. Even Nathaniel finally activated his mental–variant gift.
They all wanted each other dead, but right now, they were trapped on the same sinking boat.
Minute by minute, the zombies kept coming, but the backup was nowhere to be seen.
“Is it possible that the backup’s stuck downstairs?” someone yelled.
That was when it hit them.
Arnold had locked down the lower floors earlier. No one was allowed up.
So who was coming to save them?
The realization broke what little hope remained.
A few people faltered. Their gifts were already drained. When they heard that help wasn’t coming, their legs gave out, and they collapsed.
“Raarh!”
A zombie smashed through the thick tabletop. Its claws grabbed the fallen man by the hair and yanked his head through the gap. The horde tore into him from both sides of the table, and his body thrashed violently.
The sight jolted the others into moving again. They scrambled backward, desperate to stay alive.
But the zombie tide was endless. They climbed over corpses and spilled past the broken barricade.
“Raarh!”
“Raarh!”
