Chapter 539
The zombies rushing in like a solid wall were stopped cold.
The next second, they were blasted away by a storm of water.
The entire curtain of mist seemed to rip every drop of moisture out of the air in an instant. Everyone felt it at once. Their faces dried. Their palms went tight and rough.
Then, the water exploded.
Mist detonated through the room, soaking every corner except the people still breathing. Each needle of water hit like a high–speed bullet.
More than 100 zombies were wiped out in a single heartbeat.
A moment ago, the zombies had been roaring and charging. Now, they lay scattered across the floor like a room that had just been flooded and drained.
No one spoke.
Everyone stared, stunned, at the source of that absurd power.
It was Hayley.
Then, the glass shattered with a loud crash.
Zombies packed into the hallway smashed through window after window. They poured in like a broken dam, bodies tumbling over one another as they charged.
Arms flailed. Claws slashed. They sprinted over their own fallen, desperate to reach fresh prey.
Several of them were mutants. Most of the guards on this floor had been Gifted while alive. Once infected, they kept those abilities.
One zombie moved faster than the rest. It was both speed and strength–enhanced, and its skin had hardened into something close to armor. It slammed through ordinary zombies in its way, smashing them into the walls so hard that they left human–shaped dents behind.
In just a few seconds, it reached the front.
That was when Hayley stepped out from the back line. Cold light flashed behind her as she drew a saber.
“That’s a strength–enhanced zombie mutant with hardened skin!” Nathaniel shouted. “You can’t beat it head–on!
The next second, he froze.
Hayley’s blade came down and split the zombie’s skull clean open, like cutting through soft fruit. The saber slid through hardened flesh and bone without slowing.
That zombie had been strength–enhanced.
So was Hayley, but her strength was on an entirely different level.
She yanked the blade free, crystal core gleaming, then kicked the corpse straight back into the charging horde.
Nathaniel was completely stunned. He stared at Hayley moving through the zombies, saber flashing, every strike

brutal and clean.
The image he had of her cracked apart piece by piece.
He had known she was strong. He had seen her fight. He had seen her rescue people with weapons and tactics that were almost unfair.
