Chapter 54
“As long as you can save our captain, whatever you want, I’ll make it happen if I can!” Leonard’s face was deadly serious, and so was his promise.
Hayley’s lips curved into a sly smile. “Simple. I want you.”
Leonard froze.
His usually icy expression turned bright red, the Blush running all the way to his ears. He didn’t even know how to respond.
The rest of the squad stared at him, their faces impossible to read.
What the hell?
They figured that Leonard was just so damn good-looking, this so-called she-devil had decided to claim him as her trophy husband. They couldn’t tell if they should pity him or be jealous.
“I’m just one man,” Leonard said after taking a steadying breath. He looked Hayley right in eye. “What do you want me to do?”
the
“I want you to stay and work for me. From now on, you’ll only answer to me.”
“That’s impossible! I still have to return to my unit with my team!”
Hayley stood, stretching lazily. “Then take your time deciding. If you want me to save him, you stay.”
Watching her walk off so casually, Leonard’s hands clenched into fists. “Wait! Can you really save my captain?”
“Of course. If he’s still breathing, I’ll make sure he lives,” Hayley said, confident as ever.
With her emergency pill, she had every right to be.
Leonard went quiet for three seconds, then gave a firm nod. “Fine. If you save my captain, my life belongs to you.”
“Leonard!”
“Leonard!”
His teammates cried out all at once, panic setting in as soon as he agreed.
Leonard took a deep breath, adjusted the weight of the captain on his back, and hurried after her.
“Leonard…”
“Leonard…”
His teammates could only watch helplessly as he disappeared inside. They wanted nothing more than to rush in with him, but common sense stopped them.
This was her turf, and she was the one who let them in. Judging from the vicious dogs and whatever other defenses she had hidden around here, they weren’t about to risk making a wrong move.
In the end, all they could do was stand there and watch.
Following Hayley through the heavy iron gate into the shelter, Leonard finally got a look at the inside.
It stunned him even more.
The whole place was lit up. Somewhere deep inside, he could hear the steady hum of a generator.
