Chapter 542

Only a dozen people had made it to the top alive.
But even that didn’t last. One by one, they were picked off after landing.
Now, there were only five left. They were hiding inside trash bins in the Level Five disposal room.
No one dared breathe. They buried themselves under layers of garbage, trying to mask the smell of living flesh
They waited in the rot and filth, listening to zombies wander past.
Max was curled inside the deepest bin, clutching a little girl. Ryan hid in the bin beside them.
The girl looked about ten. She was thin and small. She clung to Max like a frightened kitten, wide eyes shining as she tried to read every sound.
Then, she heard movement.
A trash bin nearby was yanked open. The person hiding inside was exposed.
The zombies reacted instantly, like demons spotting meat.
“Raarh!”
“Raarh!”
“Help! Aaaahh!”
The man thrashed in terror as the zombies rushed him. Panic blew his fear wide open. He kicked wildly, smashing into other bins.
Bang!
Another bin toppled. Then, another.
The people hiding inside spilled out onto the floor.
Max and Ryan’s bin jolted hard. They were shoved from the back straight toward the open space.
“Raarh!”
“Raarh, raarh!”
The zombies‘ eyes lit up as three new meals appeared. They piled on, tearing them apart one by one.
“Aaaahh!”
Screams ripped through the room.
The sound of chewing was even louder.
One zombie cracked open a skull. Another slurped at exposed brain matter. Another tore open a stomach.
Teeth sank into soft organs, chewing with wet, grinding sounds that scraped straight into the nerves.
Max slammed a hand over the little girl’s mouth. She clutched his arm, shaking so hard that her whole body trembled.
The smell of blood seeped through the trash.

Then, something above them shifted.
A drop of warm blood splashed onto their faces.
They looked up.
A gaunt face came into view, skin stretched tight over bone, the flesh torn and mangled. One eye had been gouged out. The other was a dull gray, lifeless and cloudy, staring at them without blinking.
The smell of living people leaked through the garbage.
