The Endgame Chronicles (by Hugh White) novel Chapter 543

Chapter 543

Max hit the ground hard, watching Ryan get farther and farther away.

Behind Ryan, more zombies poured in.

Max’s eyes went red as he screamed.

Right then, a blur tore past him.

Max froze, staring at the straight, steady figure that appeared out of nowhere.

It was Hayley.

The saber in her hand swung at full speed. The force behind it made the blade hum, waves of sharp sound rippling through the air.

Before the steel even landed, the pressure alone split open the pack of zombies in front of her.

Slash!

One clean arc, and every zombie clinging to Ryan was sent flying.

Max just stared.

The little girl beside him stared too, eyes round with shock as Hayley cut through zombies like cardboard.

She was unreal!

Nine hundred and twenty.

Nine hundred and thirty.

Nine hundred and forty.

Nine hundred and ninety.

Hayley carved straight through the source of the swarm, pushing all the way to the garbage shaft.

She hit too hard.

There weren’t many zombies left climbing up from below, and one brutal strike sent the ones at the top flying and

shook the shaft beneath.

Ninehundred and ninetynine.

She cut down everything she could see.

Still short one.

Five minutes left.

Hayley frowned, staring into the dark, foul pit. Her mental sweep found nothing alive down there. Annoyed, she turned back, planning to hunt elsewhere.

That was when she noticed Max and Ryan.

Dad!

Max rushed to Ryan’s side.

Ryan had been scratched. The wound was on his leg; no one knew which zombie had done it or when.

Some losses always came too late to stop.

At that moment, a man in a yellow mask stepped forward.

Ms. Reid.He sounded cheerful.

What do you want?Hayley snapped, already irritated.

I’m Sigmund Cole, the deputy base director of Ark Two. Nice to finally meet you. There were some misunderstandings earlier between us and Base K1. I hope you won’t take it to heart.

Hayley recognized the voice instantly.

This was the guy who had tried to pin everything on her earlier.

A misunderstanding?she said lightly. So you’re agreeing that I didn’t poison Ark Three. Does that mean you did?

Sigmund stiffened. Of course not. I just believe now that Base K1 wouldn’t bother with something like that. And Ark Two certainly wouldn’t, either.

Oh, now you believe me?Hayley tilted her head. What about Nathaniel and the others? Do you believe them, too? Or is it just me you’re suddenly convinced about?1
