“Mr. Ortega!”
Andrew, Sydney, Ryker, and the others rushed forward together, throwing their weight against the shaky barricade as the zombie crowd pushed through.
“Raarh!”
“Raarh!”
The zombies surged through the broken opening, howling with excitement as they forced their way inside.
One hand popped out. Then two, three…
Soon, countless zombie hands shoved through the gaps between desks and chairs. Their fingers curled like hardened claws, sharp and twisted like something animal.
They scraped violently against the metal desk legs. Each swipe tore through the white paint, sending flakes and metal shavings flying while long scratches carved into the steel tubing.
The screeching sound stabbed straight into everyone’s ears.
“Raarh! Raarh! Raarh!”
“Raarh! Raarh!”
“Raarh!”
One zombie forced its head through the narrow gap between the furniture.
Seeing living, breathing prey just inches away, it exploded with strength. With a sickening crack, it slammed forward so hard that its ribs snapped against the chair legs, shoving its head farther through.
Food.
Food!
So hungry!
“Raarh!”
The zombie finally broke past the last line of defense. It opened its bloody mouth wide and lunged straight toward Marvin’s shoulder as he braced the barricade.
Thunk!
A baseball bat smashed into its skull.
Sydney stood there while gripping the bat with both hands, breathing hard as she stared at the zombie trying to bite her teacher.
Bang! Bang! Bang!
She swung again and again until the zombie’s skull collapsed inward, wedged into the chair frame. Only then did

her movements slow.
“Nice work,” Marvin said, approval clear in his voice.
At the same time, students on the other side shouted, “Over here! Hurry!”
“They’re getting through!”
Sydney sprinted over and saw another zombie forcing itself out. She swung the bat hard, smashing and jabbing until the creature was shoved back through the gap.
That became their formation.
Marvin and several boys pressed their bodies against the desks and chairs, holding the barricade in place, while Sydney ran back and forth with the bat, striking down any zombie that managed to break through.
Trina sat on the floor, scrambling backward, staring at everything in pure terror.
Time crawled forward second by second.
Zombies kept pouring in through the shattered window.
Everyone held the line.
Sydney’s arms went numb from swinging the bat.
Marvin and the others felt endless impacts slam into their shoulders and backs wherever they pressed against the furniture.
Marvin, especially, kept one hand locked against the corner of a desk.
That arm had gone so sore it was nearly numb.
He clenched his teeth and refused to let go.
Vroom!
Outside, the vehicle engine roared back to life.
Hayley, standing by the window while keeping an eye on the level-4 zombie head and Griffin’s progress, shouted, “Hold on for 30 more seconds!”
Hope surged through the room again.
Thirty seconds.
No matter how much it hurt, they had to hold.
Twenty-five seconds.
Almost there…
Twenty seconds.
Every second dragged painfully slow.
Sweat poured down everyone’s faces as more zombies forced their way in, shoving the barricade with overwhelming strength.
