Her parents were scholars. The family had money and status. Growing up, she had been the kind of girl everyone admired.

She excelled in school. She danced ballet. She played piano. She was beautiful, talented, and from a good family.

After graduating, she joined the company in this building. Within a few years, her talent earned her the position of art director.

Everything in her life had gone smoothly.

Even her marriage had been to a man who matched her perfectly in background and ability.

But more than anything else, people simply liked Jasmine.

She never acted spoiled or entitled; she was gentle and kind. All the good words people used to describe someone seemed to fit her.

Now, Jasmine clung to Warren with fierce determination.

Her entire life had been destroyed by him. If not for him, she would still be with Osbert.

Even if the world had ended, even if they had turned into zombies together, she would have accepted it.

But Warren had ruined everything and everyone.

She hated him.

She wanted him dead, even if it meant dying with him!

Jasmine held onto him with everything she had.

Seconds later, the first zombies burst out of the stairwell.

“Raarh!”

They lunged toward the two of them..

At that critical moment, Warren grabbed Jasmine and rolled across the rooftop. They tumbled together all the way to the edge.

Warren glanced back at the swarm rushing toward them, then looked at Jasmine.

“You really want me dead that badly?” he asked.

“You deserve to die!” she shouted. “You deserve it! You ruined my life! Why did you destroy everything I had? You’re trash!”

For a moment, Warren’s tense face softened. Then he laughed quietly.

“Yeah,” he said. “I’m just trash. I deserve to die.”

He glanced up at the rope ladder hanging from the helicopter above. Suddenly, he gathered all his strength, lifted Jasmine, and hurled her upward.

“But you don’t. Catch her!” Warren shouted to the people above.

The survivors climbing the rope ladder reached out immediately.

Donnie and Charlie caught her arms. They pulled Jasmine tight against the ladder.

Jasmine’s mind went blank, and she looked down.

Warren had already gotten back to his feet. He faced the endless wave of zombies rushing toward him/

Standing in the middle of the swarm, he lifted his head and looked at Jasmine one last time.

She had asked why he had to ruin her life.

She would never understand.

For someone like Warren, someone who had clawed his way up from the bottom, people like her, full of light and/ goodness, were irresistible.

“I’ll make it up to you,” Warren said quietly. “Don’t hate me anymore.”

He glanced at the helicopter above…and jumped.

He leapt straight into the sea of zombies below, drawing them away from the helicopter.

“Raarh!”

“Raarh!”

The zombies followed him like a collapsing wave, pouring over the edge after him.

Jasmine stared down in shock. Her face went completely still.

And then she heard another voice.

“Warren!”
