The Endgame Chronicles (by Hugh White) novel Chapter 659

Chapter 659

Whirr….

The helicopter blades spun faster and faster.

The aircraft lifted and headed east.

Everyone inside looked down at the rooftop below

The zombie swarm surged like a fide. Wave after wave poured across the roof.

Thousands of them rushed forward and followed the first man who had jumped, pouring over the edge one after another.

By the time the figure who jumped first disappeared completely, Jasmine was still clinging to the rope ladder.

She stared downward blankly as her pale, cracked lips trembled.

Silently, she mouthed a name.

“Warren.”

One by one, the survivors climbed into the helicopter.

This aircraft had been captured by Hayley from one of the Ark bases. It could carry up to 30 passengers.

Now, only a handful of people filled the cabin.

They sat quietly, watching the office tower fade away beneath them. It had been their home for three years.

No one spoke. The silence stretched on.

Then suddenly, Jasmine broke.

She had been sitting in the corner the entire time, motionless. Now a raw, broken sob burst out of her. The sound was loud and desperate.

Her whole body shook as she cried.

“Jasmine…”

“Jasmine…”

The others turned toward her.

Donnie and Charlie hurried over, trying to comfort her.

“We made it out,” Donnie said softly.

“It’s over now. We’re safe.”

Jasmine flailed her arms wildly, pushing away anyone who tried to come near her. She curled into the corner like a frightened animal, a terrified little kid.

Her sobs echoed through the helicopter. Her grief seemed to cut straight through the bone.

“Jasmine used to be our boss,” Donnie explained quietly. “She and our project manager, Osbert, were together before everything happened. But Warren had always been in love with her. After she and Osbert divorced, he ended

up with her. We don’t really know what went wrong between them, but their relationship was never good.”

“That’s because Jasmine never loved Warren,” Charlie said.

The moment he finished speaking, Jasmine cried again. She clutched her chest, as if something inside her had shattered.

Her sobbing grew even louder.

Didn’t love him.

Yes, she had told herself that again and again.

She believed she had hated Warren. She had decided she would hate him to the end, even die with him if she had to

He had been selfish and cruel. He had sacrificed so many people just to survive.

Someone like that deserved to die.

And yet, the pain in her chest now felt worse than when Osbert had stayed behind to fight the zombies and died in front of her.

Sometimes, the worst thing in the world was believing you hated someone completely, only to realize, too late, that love and hatred had tangled together so tightly that you couldn’t tell them apart.

Why did someone so terrible still treat her so well?

Jasmine cried until she could barely breathe..

“Jasmine…”

“Jasmine…”

The helicopter slowly descended. It landed in the central plaza of Aecraton,

By the time they touched down, Jasmine had cried herself into exhaustion and passed out.

The others had spent the entire flight in silence.

For three years, they had been trapped inside that office tower. They had no idea what the outside world looked like now.
